Midamor

Generic name: amiloride [a-MIL-o-ride]
Drug class: potassium-sparing diuretics

What is Midamor?

The potassium-sparing diuretic Midamor (water pill) prevents the body from absorbing excessive salt and helps to keep potassium levels in check. The use of Midamor to prevent or treat hypokalemia in patients with high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.Midamor can be given with any other medication.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Midamor.

Side effects of Midamor

In case of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical assistance: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling of lips, face, throat or tongue.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop taking Midamor immediately and contact your doctor.

  • Increased thirst and decreased urination
  • Heavy sweating or dry and hot skin
  • Tremors, confusion, and loss of consciousness are all symptoms that can occur.
  • Jaundice is an illness which results in yellowing of both skin and eyes.
  • High potassium--tiredness, numbness or tingling, slow or unusual heart rate, muscle weakness or limp feeling;
  • Low sodium levels in the body can cause headaches, confusion, slurred words, extreme weakness, nausea, and a feeling of unsteadiness.

Side effects that may occur from Midamor include:

  • Gas, nausea, and loss of appetite are all symptoms that can be associated with stomach pain.
  • Headache;

Warnings

Midamor should be avoided if kidney disease, an inability to urinate, or high potassium levels are present. While taking Midamor, you should not take potassium supplements or any other diuretic.Midamor may cause your potassium levels to rise. Midamor will require frequent blood testing.If you experience unusual fatigue, numbness or burning, slow heartbeats, or muscle weakness, call your doctor immediately.

Before you take this drug

Midamor should be avoided if the user is allergic or:

  • You have kidney disease, or you are unable to urinate.
  • Diabetes can cause kidney problems.
  • You have hyperkalemia (high potassium levels).
  • You should take potassium supplements.
  • You can take other potassium-sparing diuretics, such as moduretic spironolactone or triamterene.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Midamor will be safe for you:

  • Diabetes;
  • Heart disease
  • Breathing problems
  • Cirrhosis and other liver diseases
  • If you're on a diet low in salt,
  • If you're severely debilitated or ill,.

Midamor should not harm an unborn child. If you plan to get pregnant or are currently pregnant, tell your doctor.Amiloride is unknown to pass into breast milk or harm nursing babies.Breastfeeding mothers should not take this medication.

How to take Midamor?

Please follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Occasionally, your doctor will change the dose you are taking to ensure that you receive the best possible results. Midamor should not be used in higher or lower doses or for longer than prescribed. Midamor can be taken with any food. You may be advised by your doctor to eat specific foods or supplement with potassium in order to prevent a low level. Your doctor or nutritionist will have created a diet plan and prescribed medication for you. You will require frequent blood tests while using Midamor. Electrocardiographs (also called EKGs) may be used to check your heart's function. It can interfere with certain tests. Inform any doctor that treats you about your use of Midamor. It is possible that you will need to discontinue this medication at least three days prior to undergoing a test for glucose tolerance. Keep away from heat or moisture.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as possible, take the missed dose. If your next dose is close, do not take the missed one. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisoning and seek immediate medical advice.

What should be avoided?

Use only salt-free or potassium-free milk. They could increase your potassium level while taking Midamor. A diet that is high in sodium can make this medication less effective. This medication can be less effective if you consume too much salt. Midamor and alcohol can have side effects. Drink enough liquids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during physical activity, in hot weather, or when exercising. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much fluid can sometimes be just as dangerous as not drinking enough.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you will stop or start using.

  • Lithium;
  • Medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection—cyclosporine, tacrolimus;
  • An ace inhibitor is an ace (angiotensin-converting enzyme) such as benazepril, captopril, enalapril, or fosinipril.
  • Heart or blood pressure medication--azilsartan, candesartan, eprosartan, irbesartan, losartan, olmesartan, telmisartan, valsartan;
  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: aspirin (advil), ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin, and other nsaids.
