What is Metronidazole?
Metronidazole (topical) for the skin is used to treat lesions of the skin caused by Rosacea. Metronidazole topical can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.
Side effects of Metronidazole topical
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy: difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your lips, face, throat, tongue, or mouth, seek emergency medical attention.
Metronidazole topical may cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- You may experience tingling or burning in the hands and feet, as well as numbness.
- Metronidazole can cause stinging and burning.
Side effects associated with metronidazole cream include:
- Burning or stinging
- Skin redness and irritation
- Itchy, dry, or scaly skin
- Symptoms of a cold, including a stuffy nose and a sneezing, sore neck.

Before you take this drug
If you have an allergy to metronidazole, do not use it.
If you've ever:
- A disorder of the nervous system.
Metronidazole topical is unknown if it will harm the unborn child. Inform your doctor whether you plan to get pregnant or are already pregnant. Breastfeeding is not recommended while you are using topical metronidazole. Metronidazole topical cannot be used by those under the age of 18.
How to take Metronidazole?
Read and follow all instructions or guides that come with your medication, and follow all directions outlined on its label. Take it only by mouth. Topical medicines are only to be used on the skin. Apply topical metronidazole after cleansing and drying your skin. The medication should be applied in a thin, even layer. Rub it in thoroughly. After using topical metronidazole, you can apply cosmetics. Use metronidazole only after consulting your physician to diagnose any skin conditions. Even if you feel better quickly, continue to take this medication for as long as it is prescribed. You can get infections if you skip doses. If your symptoms don't improve or worsen while you are using the metronidazole cream, call your doctor. Keep away from heat or moisture.
Details on dosage
Adult dosage for acne rosacea in
1% Gel or Cream: Rub a thin layer of cream on the affected areas once daily.
Topical Lotion, Cream, or Gel 0.75%: Rub a thin, even layer on the affected areas twice daily (morning and evening).
Comments:
Prior to applying this medication, the area to be treated must be cleaned with a gentle or mild cleanser.
After using this medication, patients may apply cosmetics.
Cosmetics should not be used until the skin has dried (at least five minutes).
Uses:
Topical treatment for rosacea papules or pustules
Topical cream 1%: To treat inflammatory lesions, erythema, and rosacea.
Topical Gel 1%: To treat inflammatory lesions in rosacea
Adult dose for bacterial vaginosis:
Use 1 applicatorful of 1.3% vaginal gel intravaginally, once before bedtime.
Vaginal gel 0.75%: Apply 1 applicatorful intravaginally twice daily for five days.
Vandazole: Inject 1 applicatorful of the product intravaginally, once daily at bedtime.
Use: To treat bacterial vaginitis
-Vandazole in non-pregnant women
The usual pediatric dose for bacterial vaginosis is:
Vaginal Gel: 1.3%
Inject 1 syringe intravaginally at night for women 12 and older.
Vandazole (0.75 % vaginal gel)
Postmenstrual women: Inject 1 applicatorful into the vaginal canal once daily at night for five days.
Treatment of bacterial vaginosis
-Vandazole in nonpregnant females
What happens if I miss the dose?
If it is almost time for your next dose, but one was missed, skip that dose altogether and do not take two of the same medicine at the same time.
What happens if I overdose?
Metronidazole overdoses are not considered dangerous; if anyone accidentally ingests any medication, contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately or seek emergency medical assistance immediately.
What should be avoided?
Use metronidazole topically only on the skin. Do not get metronidazole in your eyes.
Interaction with other drug
Other drugs that you take are unlikely to affect the medicine applied to your skin. Many drugs interact. Inform your health care providers of all the medicines that you take, including prescription medicines and over-the-counter medications.
