Mecamylamine

Generic name:Mecamylamine [mecka-MILLeen].
Brand names: Velcamyl.
Drug class: peripherally acting antiadrenergic drugs

What is Mecamylamine?

Mecamylamine can be used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), from mild to severe. Mecamylamine has many side effects and is therefore not widely used. Mecamylamine can also be used to treat malignant high blood pressure (extremely elevated blood pressure that occurs suddenly). Untreated malignant hypertension may damage the organs of the body. Mecamylamine can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Mecamylamine

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling to lips, face or throat - seek medical assistance immediately!

Mecamylamine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Tremors or muscle jerks
  • Numbness, tingling, burning pain;
  • Urination that is painful or difficult
  • Stomach bloating and diarrhea are both ongoing symptoms.
  • Confusion is a problem of thinking.
  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • A seizure;
  • Feeling short of breath, dry cough.

Mecamylamine can cause a number of side effects.

  • Dizziness or fainting.
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting ;
  • Constipation;
  • Swollen or dry tongue;
  • Feeling tired or weak;
  • Blurred vision
  • Impotence - decreased interest in sexual activity

Before you take this drug

Mecamylamine should not be used if:

  • Hypertension that is mild, moderate or under control;
  • Kidney Failure or severe kidney disease
  • Glaucoma;
  • A blockage of the intestines or stomach;
  • Poor blood flow in your heart
  • If you've recently suffered a cardiac arrest.

Mecamylamine should not be taken with certain drugs. If you are also taking an anti-biotic, or a sulfa medication, your doctor may alter your treatment plan.

Tell your doctor about any of the following:

  • A heart attack or stroke
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Urination problems
  • A chronic infection
  • Bleeding problems
  • If you're on a diet low in salt.

Mecamylamine is not known to harm unborn babies. Inform your doctor if pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking mecamylamine.

How to take Mecamylamine?

Please read carefully the label or package containing your medication before beginning taking it.Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. As directed, take your medication exactly as prescribed. After meals, take mecamylamine. Mecamylamine and meals should be taken at the same interval. Take your medication 15 minutes after you eat, for example. You may require different doses of this medication at different times during the day. Do not forget to follow your doctor's instructions. You should not stop taking your medicine or change your dosage without consulting your doctor. You may also need to undergo other tests.

If you experience a high fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or are perspiring, call your doctor immediately. Tell your surgeon if you are planning surgery that you use this medication. Stopping abruptly can make your condition worse. You may worsen your condition if you stop suddenly. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:
Orally, take 2.5 mg twice daily. You may add one tablet of 2.5 mg every 2 days until you achieve the desired response.
Comments:
The average daily dose of 25 mg is usually divided into three doses, but 2.5 mg may be enough. Some patients may develop partial tolerance, requiring an increase in total daily dose.
When smooth control is not possible, four or more doses are required.
The titration of the drug should be determined based on the blood pressure in the upright position during the maximum effect of the drug as well as the signs and symptoms of orthostatic hypertension. In cases of severe or urgent conditions, it may be necessary to titrate at higher increments with shorter intervals.
Use: treatment of uncomplicated malignant hypertension and moderately severe to severely essential hypertension.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If it is almost time for your next dose, disregard any missed ones and wait. Never double up.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, anxiety or pounding hearts.

What should be avoided?

Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise and hot weather. Mecamylamine can affect your reactions. Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you are sure of how it will affect you. You may be unable to react. You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying position. Alcohol consumption can have side effects when taken with this medication.

Interaction with other drug

Your doctor may adjust your doses of other blood pressure medications you regularly take when you begin or stop taking mecamylamine.

Notify your doctor of all medications you are currently taking, such as:

  • Antibiotics;
  • A diuretic, or "water pill".
