What is Lysine?

Lysine is an amino acid (a building block of protein), and it is also known as L-2,6-diaminohexanoic acid, Lisina, Lys, Lysine Hydrochloride, Lysine Monohydrochloride, and other names.In alternative medicine, Lysine is used as an aid that may be effective in treating cold sores caused by Herpes simplex.Other uses that have not been proven by research include canker sores, diabetes, and stress.There is no way to know if lysine can be used as a treatment for any medical condition. The FDA has not approved the use of this product for medical purposes. Lysine shouldn't be substituted for medication prescribed by your doctor.Lysine can be sold as an herbal supplement. Many herbal compounds are not manufactured to regulated standards, and some supplements on the market have been found to be contaminated with toxic drugs or metals. To minimise the risk, herbal or health supplements must be purchased from a reputable source.

Side effects of Lysine

How to take Lysine?

What happens if I miss the dose?

If it is almost time for your next dosage, ignore any missed ones and skip ahead to your scheduled date of administration. You should not use additional lysine in order to make up for a missed dose.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor has prescribed any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.Lysine increases the amount of calcium that your body can absorb. Take small amounts of calcium if you are taking lysine.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies, may also interact with lysine.Inform all healthcare providers of any medications you are currently taking or intend to take in order to facilitate monitoring and care.

You should not take lysine unless you have been advised by your doctor if you use any of the medications listed below:

  • Calcium supplements
  • Take gastrointestinal medications (such as prucalopride or tegaserod).
