What is Lusutrombopag?

Lusutrombopag, a synthetic form of the protein, increases platelet production in your body. Lusutrombopag reduces the risk of blood clots by increasing platelets.Lusutrombopag treats thrombocytopenia (a lack of platelets in the blood) in adults who have chronic liver diseases and are scheduled for a medical procedure.It is important to note that Lusutrombopag does not cure thrombocytopenia or restore platelet counts.Lusutrombopag can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Lusutrombopag

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

If your platelet counts are too high, you could develop a blood clot while taking lusutrombopag. If you experience:

  • A sudden feeling of numbness or weakness on one side
  • Problems with speech or vision
  • The swelling or redness of the arm or leg is a sign that you need to seek medical attention.
  • Fever, chills;
  • Jaundice
  • Bloody or tarry stool, vomiting blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Some of the side effects that lusutrombopag can cause include:

  • Headache.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to lusutrombopag, then it is best not to use this product.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • A blood clot
  • A bleeding or blood-clotting disorder that is not thrombocytopenia

There is no way to know if lusutrombopag can harm an unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.Do not breastfeed your baby for at least 28 days after the last dose.

How to take Lusutrombopag?

Follow all instructions or guides included with your medication and comply with them exactly. Follow the directions on the label.Take Lusutrombopag once daily, starting 8–14 days prior to your procedure.Take lusutrombopag either with or without food.Be sure to follow your doctor's advice regarding timing and dosage for taking any prescribed medicines.Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Each tablet should be kept in its foil blister until you're ready to use it.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for thrombocytopenia:

Start taking 3 mg once daily, 8–14 days before the scheduled procedure.
Duration of treatment: 7 days
Comment: Patients should have their procedure done 2–8 days after the last dosage.
Use: To treat thrombocytopenia among patients with chronic liver diseases who are undergoing a surgical procedure.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Do not forget to take the missed dose. Continue to take your daily dose and your regular next dose.Take both doses at separate times each day. Doing otherwise could increase the chances of side-effects occurring and may put yourself and others in jeopardy.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies, may also affect lusutrombopag. Informing your physician of all medications you are currently taking and any changes or additions is important.
