What is Lurbinectedin?

Side effects of Lurbinectedin

If you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of face lips throat or face

Lurbinectedin may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or purple or red patches under the skin
  • Low red blood cells (anaemia): pale or pale-coloured skin, unusual fatigue, feeling lightheaded or short-of-breath, cold hands and/or feet
  • Low white blood cell count: fever; mouth sores or skin sores; sore neck; cough.
  • Signs of Sepsis: confusion, fever, chills, or severe drowsiness; rapid heartbeats and breathing; feeling very sick.
  • Liver problems: loss of appetite, pain in the upper right corner of the stomach, tiredness, itchiness, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice

Side effects of lurbinectedin include:

  • Low blood cell count
  • Coughing and difficulty breathing
  • Nausea; vomiting; loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Diarrhoea, constipation;
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Feeling tired
  • Abnormal blood tests

Warnings

Lurbinectedin increases your risk of bleeding and infection. You will require frequent medical tests.

Before you take this drug

Inform your physician immediately of any of the following conditions:

  • Liver or kidney disease

Before starting the treatment, you may need a negative pregnancy result.

If either the mother or father uses lurbinectedin, it can cause harm to an unborn child.

  • Do not take lurbinectedin while pregnant if you're a woman. Use birth control during treatment and for 6 months following your last dose.
  • Use effective birth control if you're a man and your partner can get pregnant. Continue to use birth control for at least four months after your last dose.
  • If you or your partner are pregnant, tell your doctor immediately.

Do not breastfeed for 2 weeks after taking this medication.

How to take lurbinectedin medication?

You may need to have a blood test done before receiving lurbinectedin. This will check liver function.An injection of Lurbinectedin into the vein is administered. This injection will be given by a healthcare provider.The infusion should take no more than an hour.Other medications may be administered to prevent nausea and vomiting.The Lurbinectedin injection is typically given every 21 days.Lurbinectedin may lower your blood count. You will have to test your blood often. The results may delay your cancer treatment.The length of treatment with this medication will be determined by your doctor.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for small cell lung cancer:

Every 21 days, 3.2 mg/m2 IV every 60 minutes until disease progression or unacceptable toxicities
Comments:
Start this drug only when the absolute neutrophil (ANC) count is 1500 cells/mm3 or more and the platelet count is 100,000/mm3.
Consider administering antiemetic medications as pre-infusions.
Use: To treat adult patients with metastatic small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) with disease progression after platinum-based chemotherapy.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are unable to attend your scheduled lurbinectomy treatment, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses are unlikely because lurbinectedin will be administered by a healthcare provider in a medical environment.

What should be avoided?

Grapefruit can interact with lurbinectedin, causing unwanted side effects. Avoid grapefruit products.

Interaction with other drug

It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications together. Some drugs may affect the blood levels of drugs that you are taking, which can increase side effects and make them less effective.Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal products, may also affect lurbinectedin. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
