Drug class: non-ionic iodinated contrast media

What is the Isovue 200?

It is radiopaque. The medicine is made up of iodine, which absorbs x-rays. The radiopaque contrast agent is used in CT scans and other radiologic (x-ray) exams to make blood vessels, non-bony tissue, and organs more visible.

The Isovue 200 is used for diagnosing certain diseases of the brain, heart, blood vessels, and nervous system. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Isovue 200.

Side effects of Isovue-200

If you experience symptoms of an allergy (hives), a skin reaction that is severe (red or purple rash, blistering, or sore eyes), or any other serious reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

If you experience a severe drug reaction, seek medical attention. This can include a skin rash or swollen-looking glands. Other symptoms may be muscle pain, weakness, or unusual bruises.

It is possible that Isovue 200 can cause severe side effects. If you experience:

  • Feeling dizzy, as though you could collapse.
  • Weight gain and swelling are rapid, but there's little urinating.
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizure (convulsions);
  • You may experience swelling of the neck or throat.
  • Symptoms of thyroid disease include extreme tiredness, dry skin, and joint stiffness.
  • Heart attack symptoms: chest pain, pressure or pain in your shoulder or jaw, nausea, and sweating.
  • Signs of a pulmonary blood clot: chest pain, sudden hack, and breathlessness; coughing blood.
  • Signs of a stroke include sudden numbness and weakness, especially on one side, a severe headache, or slurred or slowed speech.

Side effects that may occur with Isovue 200 include:

  • Chest pain;
  • Low heart rate
  • Hot flashes; burning sensation
  • Flushing (warmth or redness);
  • Nausea;
  • Hives

Warnings

If you are infected with Isovue 200, it should be avoided.

Before you take this drug

If you've ever:

  • Any type of reaction with another contrast agent
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Congestive heart failure.
  • Stroke, blood clots, or coronary artery disease
  • Allergies, such as hay fever and asthma;
  • Epilepsy
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Diabetes;
  • An active infection
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Bone cancer;
  • A thyroid condition.

Isovue 200 is unknown to cause harm to an unborn child. Inform your doctor that you're pregnant.

How to take Isovue 200?

Isovue 200 is infused into the vein or artery. This injection will be given by a healthcare professional. While you receive Isovue 200, your doctor may prescribe medication to help prevent side effects. If you experience any pain or swollen skin around the needle of Isovue 200, tell your care provider.

Be sure to drink extra water before and after the radiologic exam. Dehydration can be caused by isovue 200, and this can have dangerous effects on the kidneys. You should follow your doctor's advice on the type and quantity of fluids to drink both before and after your exam.

You may want to take extra care with older adults in order to prevent dehydration. You may be required to have your kidney function checked after receiving Isovue 200. Some reactions to Isovue 200 have started 30–60 minutes after the first administration. You may be watched by your carers during the first 30 to 60 minutes after receiving an injection. You want to be sure that you don't have any side effects.

You may experience interference with some medical tests up to 16 weeks after taking Isovue 200. Inform any physician who treats you about your recent use of this medication.

What happens if I miss the dose?

You will not have a schedule of doses since Isovue 200 is only used during radiologic tests.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

You should not become dehydrated in the first couple of days following Isovue 200. This is the time to call your doctor for any nausea or diarrhea. You should follow your doctor's advice on the type and quantity of fluids to drink.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking, including:

  • Diabetes medicine that contains metformin. (Glucophage Glucovance Actoplus Met prandimet Avandamet Janumet Kazano Invokamet Jentadueto Xigduo, Synjardy Metaglip, and others.
