What is Azopt?
Azopt is a prescription eye drop that treats certain forms of glaucoma as well as other conditions that cause high pressure in the eye.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Azopt.
Side effects of Azopt
If you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as hives or difficulty breathing or swelling on your face, throat, or nose, or an extreme skin reaction, including burning eyes or skin, fever, blistered and peeling skin, or skin pain or redness, seek emergency medical attention.
Azopt can cause severe side effects. Azopt should be stopped immediately, and you need to call your doctor if:
- Eye pain, swelling, or redness
- Light sensitivity
- You may feel something in your eyes.
- Stomach pain on the upper right side
- Jaundice
- Signs of an eye infection include swelling, discomfort, and crusting.
Azopt can cause the following side effects:
- Blurred vision
- A bitter taste or a strange flavor in the mouth.

Before you take this drug
Azopt should be avoided if you have an allergy to or brinzolamide.
If you've ever:
- Narrow-angle glaucoma;
- An allergy is to sulfa drugs.
- Kidney disease is a serious condition.
This medicine is unknown to cause harm to an unborn child. Inform your doctor of any pregnancy or plans to get pregnant.This medicine should not be used while breastfeeding.
How to take Azopt?
Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all the directions. Follow the directions on your prescription label.Use only when wearing soft lenses. This medicine contains a preservative that could stain lenses permanently. You should wait at least 15 min before inserting contact lenses after taking the medication.Before using any eye medications, wash your hands.Before each use, shake the eyedrops well.Applying eye drops is as simple as tilting your head slightly back and pulling down the lower eyelid. Squeeze a few drops into the pocket created by holding the dropper over the eye. For 1 to 2 minutes, close your eyes.Only use the drops prescribed by your doctor. Use the prescribed eye drops at least 10 min after using your first prescription.Avoid touching the tip or placing it on the eye. If the dropper is contaminated, it can cause serious eye problems.Inform your doctor immediately if you are suffering from an infection or injury to the eye, or if any kind of eye surgery is planned. At times it may be necessary to temporarily stop taking medication.Keep the bottle at room temperature. Keep the bottle tightly shut when not being used.
What happens if I miss the dose?
If you are almost due for the next dose, skip the dose that was missed. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.
What happens if I overdose?
Azopt overdose is unlikely to cause harm. If anyone accidentally swallows the drug, seek emergency medical care or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.
Avoid this
Azopt can cause blurred or impaired vision, and it may also affect your reaction. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how the medicine affects you.You should only use eye drops prescribed by your physician.
Interaction with other drug
Inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking for glaucoma.Azopt may be affected by other drugs, such as prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
