What is isopto atropine?

Isopto atropine is used to widen the pupils of adults and children over 3 months to prepare for an eye examination or surgery. It can also be used to treat swelling in the eye or amblyopia.

Isopto atropine can be used in other ways than those described in this guide.

Side effects of isopto-atropine

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.

Atropine can cause side effects, even though the risk is low. Isopto-atropine can cause light sensitivity and blurred vision for up to two weeks. Children may absorb more medicine and be more susceptible to side effects.

Isopto-atropine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe burning or stinging in the eyes
  • Severe eye irritation or reddening;
  • Rapid heart rate; restlessness, irritability, or anxiety.
  • Signs of an eye infection include swelling, discomfort, crusting, or drainage.
  • Flushing (sudden heat, redness, or tingly sensation);
  • High blood pressure severe headache, blurred vision, pinning in the neck or ears

Isopto-atropine can cause the following side effects:

  • The drops may cause mild pain or stinging when placed in your eyes.
  • Dry mouth, eyes, nose, or throat
  • Fast heart rate; elevated blood pressure
  • Red, watery, or irritated eyes;
  • Sleepiness
  • Vision problems

Warnings

This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to atropine. This medicine should not be used as an ointment if you are suffering from glaucoma or have a tendency to get glaucoma.

Before you take this drug

Isopto atropine should not be used if you have an allergy to atropine. If you are prone to glaucoma or have a tendency towards glaucoma, then the ointment version of this medication is not for you.

Tell your doctor about any of the following:

  • High blood pressure
  • Glaucoma;
  • A history of belladonna alkaloids sensitivity, such as belladonna or homatropine

Isopto atropine may harm an unborn child. Inform your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or contemplating becoming pregnant.  Ask your doctor if you can safely breastfeed while taking this medication. Never let a child under the age of 12 use isopto atropine on their own.

How to take isopto atropine?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. After using eye medications, wash your hands. Apply the eye drops by pulling down your lower lid to create a pocket. Squeeze a few drops into this pocket. Close your eyes for a minute or two.

Only use the number of drops prescribed. Wait 10 minutes after using the first eye drop before using another. Use only when wearing soft lenses. This medicine contains a preservative that could permanently stain lenses. Wait 15 minutes or more before inserting contact lenses. If the medication is cloudy, has changed color, or contains particles, call your pharmacist.

To apply the ointment, pull down your lower lid to create a pocket. In this pocket, squeeze a small amount of ointment. Close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes and blink gently. Wipe off any excess ointment using a tissue. Make sure not to touch or place the tip directly on your eye. The tip of the eye dropper or ointment tube can cause serious vision problems if it is contaminated.

Keep this medication at room temperature. Keep away from freezing. When not in use, keep the tube or bottle tightly closed. Store eye drops upright.

What happens if i miss the dose?

If your next dose is almost due, skip any missed ones. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if i overdose?

If anyone accidentally swallows the medicine, seek emergency medical care or call poison help at 1-800-222-1222. The symptoms of an overdose may include hallucinations or increased salivation.

What should be avoided?

Do not use any other eye medication prescribed by your doctor. Isopto atropine can cause blurred vision or affect your reaction. Do not drive, particularly at night or during hazardous activities, until you have determined how the medicine affects you.

Isopto atropine can make your eyes more sensitive. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses when you're outdoors or in bright sunlight.

Interaction with other drug

Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:

  • Mao inhibitors such as isocarboxazid (linezolid), methylene blue injection (phenelzine), tranylcypromine, and others

Other medications you are taking shouldn't interfere with the medicine for your eyes. Many drugs interact. Tell your doctor all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal remedies.
