What is Ipratropium nasal?

Ipratropium (for the nasal cavity) reduces mucus secretions. Ipratropium nasal can be used to treat runny or stuffy noses caused by seasonal allergies. Ipratropium nasal does not treat a stuffy nose, sneezing, or cough. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Ipratropium nasal.

Side effects of Ipratropium nasal

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention: hives; rash, wheezing, or difficulty breathing; swelling on your face, lips, and tongue; swelling in your throat.

Ipratropium nasal may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around light
  • Nosebleeds or severe dryness
  • Urination that is painful or difficult

Ipratropium nasal side effects may include:

  • Headache;
  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat
  • Minor nosebleed
  • A sore throat
  • Blurred vision
  • Unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to ipratropium or atropine, then ipratropium should not be used.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that ipratropium is safe for you:

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma;
  • Other urination issues or bladder obstruction
  • An enlarged prostate
  • Liver or kidney disease

FDA pregnancy class B It is not expected that ipratropium nasal will harm a baby in utero. If you plan to get pregnant or are pregnant, tell your doctor.

Ipratropium nasal may pass into breast milk and harm nursing babies. You should tell your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child. Children younger than five years of age should not use ipratropium nasal.

How to take Ipratropium nasal?

Do not alter the instructions on your prescription. Use this medication only as directed. Be careful not to exceed the recommended dosage or use it for too long. The instructions that come with this medicine include safe and effective usage as well as directions on how to prime the nasal spray pump. Please follow the instructions carefully. If you have questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Ipratropium nasal should only be used for a short period of time. For example, 4 days for the common cold and 3 weeks for allergies Please follow your doctor's instructions for dosage. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture. When not in use, keep the cap tightly shut. The medicine should not be allowed to freeze.

Adult dose for rhinorrhea

Rhinorrhea Associated with Allergic and Nonallergic Chronic Rhinitis
0.03%: Two sprays in each nostril, two to three times per day.
Rhinorrhea associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
0.06%: 2 sprays per nostril, 4 times a day
Rhinorrhea associated with the common cold
0.06%: 2 sprays in each nostril, 3 to 4 times per day

The usual pediatric dose for gonorrhea is::

Rhinorrhea associated with allergic and nonallergic perennial rhinitis
Six years and older
0.03%: Two sprays in each nostril, two to three times per day.
Rhinorrhea associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
Age 5 or older
0.06%: 2 sprays per nostril, 4 times a day
Rhinorrhea associated with the common cold
0.06%:
5–11 years: 2 sprays in each nostril, 3 times per day.
12 years and older: 2 sprays in each nostril, 3 to 4 times per day.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as you remember, take the missed dose. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching quickly, skip it altogether. You should not take extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Ipratropium nasal should not be used in the eyes. This medication may cause blurred or double vision and affect your ability to think clearly. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires you to have clear vision and to be alert.

Interaction with other drug

Ipratropium nasal may interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines you are taking and those you plan to take.
