Indomethacin

Indomethacin (generic name) [indo-METH-asin]

Dosage Forms: Oral capsule (20 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg), oral capsule with extended release (75mg), or oral suspension (25 mg/5 ml).

What is Indomethacin?

Indomethacin (NSAID) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.Indomethacin can be used to treat mild to moderate osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It is also effective for gouty arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Indomethacin can also be used to treat shoulder discomfort caused by bursitis or tendinitis.

Indomethacin SR (Indocin SR), which is a long-acting indomethacin, should not be taken to treat gouty arthritis.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Indomethacin.

Side effects of Indomethacin

If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling on your face or in your throat, or a severe reaction to the skin (fever or sore throat with burning eyes, skin pain or blistering, or a red or purple rash), seek emergency medical attention.Seek immediate medical care if you notice any of the symptoms.

If you experience a severe drug reaction, stop using indomethacin immediately and consult a doctor. Symptoms include skin rash or hives, swollen or enlarged glands, muscle pain, weakness, or unusual bruises.

Indomethacin can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • A skin rash is a rash on the skin, regardless of how mild it may be.
  • Changes in your vision
  • Heart problems: swelling, rapid weight gain, and feeling short of breath.
  • Signs of liver or pancreas disease include: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may spread up your back), unusual fatigue, itching (flu-like symptoms), dark urine, and yellowing of the skin or eye;
  • Signs of stomach bleeding include bloody or tarry stool, vomiting that looks like coffee, or coughing up blood.
  • If you have kidney problems, it could be that your urine is not as frequent, that swelling of the feet or ankles makes you feel tired, or that you are short of breath.
  • Low red blood cells (anemia)--pale or unusually tired skin, feeling lightheaded or short-of-breath, cold hands and/or feet

Indomethacin can cause a number of side effects.

  • Indigestion, nausea;
  • Headache

Warnings

Indomethacin may increase your risk of a fatal stroke or heart attack, even if there are no risk factors. Indomethacin should not be taken before or after heart bypass surgeries.

Indomethacin can also cause fatal stomach or intestinal bleeding. Indomethacin can cause these conditions without warning, especially among older adults.

Before you take this drug

Even if you have no risk factors, Indomethacin may increase your risk of a fatal heart attack or stroke. This medicine should not be taken before or immediately after a heart bypass (also known as a CABG or coronary artery bypass).

Indomethacin can also cause fatal stomach or intestinal bleeding. Indomethacin can cause these conditions without warning, especially among older adults.

Indomethacin should not be used if it is allergic or if there has been a severe allergic reaction or aspirin attack after taking an NSAID or aspirin.

Tell your doctor about any of the following:

  • High blood
  • A heart attack, stroke, or blood clot
  • Fluid retention;
  • Bleeding problems
  • Stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • Asthma;
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • If you smoke.

Do not take an NSAID if you are pregnant unless you have been told to by your doctor. Nsaids can cause kidney or heart problems for the unborn child and other complications during pregnancy.This medicine can temporarily reduce fertility in women.

Breastfeeding may not be possible while taking this medication. You should ask your doctor if there are any risks.Anyone younger than 14 is not allowed to use Indomethacin.

How to take indomethacin?

Read all the instructions on the label of your medication and follow them. Use the lowest effective dose to treat your condition.Do not open, crush, chew, or break the capsule.Before measuring a dose, shake the orally suspended liquid. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon).

If you change brands, strengths, or forms of indomethacin, your dose requirements may be different. Use only the strength and form prescribed by your doctor to avoid medication mistakes.You may need to undergo frequent medical tests if you take this medication for a long time.

Tell your surgeon, if you are considering surgery, that you use this medication. You may have to stop using this medicine for a while.Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Don't allow liquid medicines to freeze.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of a medicine at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and severe drowsiness.

What should be avoided?

Avoid alcohol. Avoid alcohol.Aspirin should only be taken if your doctor recommends it.They may contain ingredients similar to indomethacin. These medicines may contain similar ingredients to indomethacin, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Ketoprofen and naproxen.

Interaction with other drug

If you are taking an antidepressant, ask your doctor if indomethacin is right for you. Certain antidepressants may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking indomethacin along with other medications.

  • Cyclosporine;
  • Lithium;
  • Methotrexate;
  • Probenecid;
  • Heart or blood pressure medications, including diuretics or "water pills";
  • A blood thinner: warfarin Coumadin Jantoven
  • Other nsaids include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib (Aleve), diclofenac (Diclofenac), meloxicam (Meloxicam), and others.
