What is Hyoscyamine, methenamine, methylene blue, and sodium biphosphate?

Hyoscyamine has many effects on the body, including the relief of muscle spasms.Methylene blue and methenamine are mild antiseptics that fight bacteria in urine and the bladder.Sodium biphosphate, a naturally occurring substance, is a form of phosphorus.A combination medicine containing methenamine and sodium biphosphate is used to treat bladder inflammation (pain, swelling, or burning) due to a urinary infection. Side effects of Hyoscyamine, methenamine, methylene blue, and sodium biphosphate

Your urine or stools will likely appear green or blue if you use methylene blue. This is not a harmful side effect and is normal.If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

How to take Hyoscyamine, methenamine, methylene blue, and sodium biphosphate?

Do not take more or less than prescribed, or for longer than necessary.. Take this medication only as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or take it for a longer time.Do not crush, chew, or break enteric-coated pills. Swallow them whole. The coating on the pill is designed to protect your stomach. This coating will be damaged if you break the pill.Take this medication with plenty of fluids.Tell your eye doctor if you plan to use hyoscyamine (methenamine), methylene blue, or sodium biphosphate before you go for an eye examination.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly shut.

Adult dose for urinary tract infection:

Hyoscyamine/methenamine/m-blue/sodium biphosphate 0.12 mg-81.6 mg-10.8 mg-40.8 mg oral tablet:
Take one tablet four times a day.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as possible, take the missed dose. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching quickly, skip it instead; additional medicine should never be taken to make up for missed ones.

What happens if I overdose?

Dial 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisoning and seek immediate medical assistance.

What should be avoided?

Avoid taking an anti-diarrhea or antacid within one hour of hyoscyamine or methenamine. Anti-diarrhea or antacids can interfere with the absorption of hyoscyamine.Wait at least two hours after you have taken ketoconazole before taking hyoscyamine (methenamine), methylene blue, and sodium biphosphate.

Interaction with other drug

Among the drugs that can interact with sodium biphosphate, methylene blue, hyoscyamine, and methenamine are: This list does not include all possible interactions. Hyoscyamine may also make it more difficult for you to absorb other medications that you take orally. Tell your doctor if you change or stop taking any medications.

  • Neostigmine or pyridostigmine;
  • You can also use bladder or urinary medications such as darifenacin (fesoterodine), oxybutynin (tolterodine), solifenacin, and fesoterodine.
  • Bronchodilators, such as ipratropium and tiotropium.
  • A cold or allergy medication that contains antihistamine
  • A diuretic, or "water pill".
  • Mao inhibitors include furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline and tranylcypromine;
  • Treatment for excess stomach acid, stomach ulcers, or motion sickness
  • If you have gout, kidney stones, or a low potassium level, then medication may be prescribed to correct the imbalance.
  • Medications to treat the symptoms of alzheimer’s disease and parkinson’s disease
  • Codeine, hydrocodone hydromorphone, methadone, morphine, oxycodone, propoxyphene, and other narcotic cough or pain medications;
  • Sulfa drugs.
