What is Hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin B otic?

Hydrocortisone is a type of steroid. It inhibits the action of chemicals that cause inflammation in the body.Antibiotics such as neomycin, polymyxin B, and neomycin fight bacteria.Combination medicine Hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin B (for the ears) are used to treat outer-ear infections caused by bacteria.This medicine should not be used to treat the inner ear.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin B.

Side effects of Hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin B otic

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat - seek medical attention immediately!

This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • If you experience severe irritation or burning after using the ear drops, please consult your doctor.
  • Hearing loss;
  • Itching, redness, swelling in the skin, dryness, scaling around or on the ear, or any other irritation

Some of the common side effects associated with hydrocortisone otic, neomycin otic, and polymyxin B may include:

  • Mild itching may occur after using ear drops.

Warnings

If you have an ear infection due to chickenpox or herpes, then you should not use neomycin or polymyxin B.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if:

  • A ruptured eardrum;
  • An ear infection that is caused by chickenpox or herpes (simple or zoster)

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that this medication is safe for you:

  • Chickenpox, also known as smallpox or chickenpox,
  • Any ear infection that causes blistering
  • Asthma, or sulfite allergies
  • If you have an allergy to an antibiotic that is similar to neomycin,

FDA pregnancy class C There is no information on whether the use of hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin B oral solutions will harm an unborn child. You should tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.Hydrocortisone may pass into the breast milk, which can harm a nursing infant. You should tell your doctor if the baby is breastfed.This medicine should not be given to a child under 2 years of age.

How to take Hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin B otic?

Do not alter the instructions on your prescription. Use this medication only as directed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or use it for longer.Cleanse and dry the ear canal before using this medication.Be sure to shake the ear drops thoroughly before using them.

How to use the eardrops:

  • If you are lying down, tilt your head upward with your ear up. When giving this medicine, gently pull your ear back or pull downward on the earlobe.
  • Drop the correct amount of drops in your ear by holding the dropper upside-down over your ear.
  • For at least five minutes, lie down with your head tipped back. Use a piece of cotton to stop the medicine from draining.
  • Avoid touching the tip of the dropper or placing it directly into your ears. It could become contaminated. Do not use soap or water to wash the tip. Instead, wipe it with a tissue.

You can also soak cotton with medicine instead of dropping it directly into your ear. Keep the cotton moist for at least 24 hours. Add a few drops to the cotton every 4 hours. Replace the cotton every 24 hours. Please follow your doctor's advice regarding the use of cotton when taking this medication.If your symptoms don't improve or worsen while you are using neomycin and polymyxin B, call your doctor.Do not stop taking the medicine before it is completely cleared. You may experience symptoms before the infection has completely cleared. You may increase your chances of a second infection resistant to antibiotics if you skip doses.If your doctor has not prescribed it, do not take hydrocortisone otic, neomycin otic, or polymyxin-B otic for more than 10 consecutive days. The long-term use of neomycin can damage your hearing.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for otitis externa:

Instill 4 drops into the affected ear, 3 or 4 times a day.
Comments:
The use of this product for therapy should not exceed 10 days in a row.
The external auditory canal must be cleaned and dried thoroughly with a sterile cotton swab.
Use: treatment for superficial bacterial infections in the external auditory canal that are susceptible to antibiotic action.

The usual pediatric dose for otitis externa is:

Two years old or older
Three drops per day are instilled 3 or 4 times into the affected ear.
Comments:
The use of this product for therapy should not exceed 10 days in a row.
The external auditory canal must be cleaned and dried thoroughly with a sterile cotton swab.
Use: treatment for superficial bacterial infections in the external auditory canal that are susceptible to antibiotic action.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as you realize that you have missed a dose, take it as soon as possible. Wait until your next dose to take the medication, and do not use the missed dose. You should not take extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses of hydrocortisone, neomycin, and polymyxin-B are not dangerous. If anyone accidentally swallows the medication, seek emergency medical care or call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222.

What should be avoided?

The medicine should only be used in the ears. Avoid getting the medication in your mouth, nose, eyes, or skin. If this medicine has gotten into or on any of these areas, rinse with water.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs that you may take orally or even inject are unlikely to have any effect on the polymyxin B, neomycin, and hydrocortisone otic used in your ears. Many drugs interact with each other. Inform your healthcare provider about the medicines you take, including prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
