
What is Hydrochlorothiazide and aliskiren?
Hydrochlorothiazide works as a diuretic. Aliskiren works as an antihypertensive medicine for low blood pressure.Combination medicine for hypertension.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren.
Side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide and aliskiren
If you experience symptoms of an allergic response (hives or vomiting), a severe skin reaction, or severe pain (fever, sore eyes, burning throat, skin pain or blisters, and peeling skin), seek emergency medical attention.
Both aliskiren and hydrochlorothiazide can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Feeling lightheadedness as though they could faint.
- Little or no urination
- Eye pain and vision problems
- High potassium level: nausea, tingly feelings, chest pains, irregular heartbeats, and loss of mobility;
- Constipation (leg cramps); low sodium level (numbness, tingling, or numbness in the chest or legs); increased thirst; or increased urination.
- Low sodium level: headache; confusion; slurred words; severe weakness; nausea; loss of coordination; and feeling unsteady.
- Lupus symptoms include muscle or joint discomfort. There may also be a fever and rashes or patches of skin that become worse in the sun.
Some of the common side effects associated with hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren include:
- Dizziness is a tired, dizzy feeling.
- High potassium
- Cough;
- Joint pain;
- Diarrhea;
- Flu symptoms (fever, chills, and body aches)

Warnings
If you have a problem urinating or are allergic to sulfa drugs, you should avoid using hydrochlorothiazide.Use this medicine only if you're not pregnant. As soon as you become pregnant, discontinue this medication immediately and notify your healthcare provider.If you have diabetes, do not take hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren with certain blood pressure and heart medicines (such as Accupril, Benicar, Capoten, Cozaar, Diovan, Lotensin, Mavik, Prinivil, Vasotec, etc.).
Before you take this drug
This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to aliskiren, hydrochlorothiazide, or:
- You are unable to urinate
- You are allergic to sulfa medications.
You should not take hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren if you have diabetes.
- Azilsartan (Edarbi, Edarbyclor), candesartan (Atacand), eprosartan (Teveten), irbesartan (Avapro, Avalide), losartan (Cozaar, Hyzaar), olmesartan (Azar, Benicar), valsartan (Diovan, Exforge Tribenzor and Telmisartan (Micardis); or other treatments;
- Benazepril, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, moexipril, moexipril, quinapril, ramipril, accuretic, accuretic, trandolapril, enalapril, enalapril, enalapril, enalapril (Vasotec), lis
If you have kidney problems, it is important to avoid using these medications with hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren.
Be sure to inform your doctor of any of the following:
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Low or elevated potassium levels in your blood could indicate that there may be low or excessive potassium intake.
- Allergies or asthma
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE);
- Glaucoma;
- Gout;
- Diabetes
- Penicillin allergy.
If you are pregnant, do not take this medication. If you are pregnant, stop using the medication and call your doctor immediately.This medicine should not be used while breastfeeding.Anyone younger than 18 is not allowed to use aliskiren or hydrochlorothiazide.
How to take Hydrochlorothiazide and aliskiren?
Read and follow all instructions or guides that accompany your medication.Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. You must take the medication exactly as prescribed.Take hydrochlorothiazide with or without food. But take it in the same manner every time. Take this medicine without food if you are taking it with high-fat meals. This can cause your body to have difficulty absorbing aliskiren.While taking hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren, you may experience very low levels of blood pressure. If you have nausea, diarrhea, or feel lightheaded, call your doctor.Your blood pressure may improve in as little as 4 weeks. Even if you are feeling well, continue to take this medication as prescribed. Often, high blood pressure has no symptoms. Blood pressure medication may be needed for the rest of your life.You will need to check your blood pressure often.Hydrochlorothiazide may increase the risk of skin cancer. Your doctor can tell you what skin symptoms to look out for.
Tell your surgeon if you will need surgery or medical tests. It may be necessary to temporarily stop taking the medication.Store at room temperature and away from heat and moisture to maintain optimal conditions for storage.Keep the tablet in its original container along with the packet of moisture-absorbing preserver.
Details on dosage
Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:
Initial dose: 150 mg-12.5 mg or 150 mg-25 mg once daily.
Maximum dose: Aliskiren-hydrochlorothiazide 300/25 mg orally daily
Comments:
Patients receiving separate tablets of aliskiren or hydrochlorothiazide can substitute the combination product.
Tablets should be taken in the same manner every day, with or without food. (High-fat foods decrease the absorption of aliskiren significantly.)
What happens if I miss the dose?
If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.
What happens if I overdose?
Contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisoning and seek immediate medical care.
What should be avoided?
Use potassium supplements and salt substitutes only if your doctor recommends them.Avoid tanning beds or sunlight. When you're outdoors, wear protective clothing and use sunblock (SPF 30 or higher).Avoid standing up quickly from a seated or lying-down position. You may feel dizzy. To avoid a fall, get up slowly.Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can lower your blood pressure further and increase the side effects of hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren.
Interaction with other drug
Take your hydrochlorothiazide or aliskiren 4 hours before taking cholestyramine or 4 hours after taking colestipol.
Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:
- Cyclosporine;
- Lithium;
- Any heart or blood pressure medications;
- A diuretic, or "water pill".
- Insulin, or oral diabetes medication
- A potassium supplement, such as k-dur or klor-con.
- Salt substitutes that contain potassium
- Antifungal medicine: itraconazole, ketoconazole;
- Cholesterol medication: atorvastatin, cholestyramine, colestipol, simvastatin, lipitor, vytorin, zocor,
- Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and indomethacin are all nsaids.
