What is Guaiasorb DM?

Dextromethorphan works as a cough suppressant. Guaifenesin works as an expectorant.Guaiasorb DM is a combination medication used to treat chest congestion and coughs caused by allergies or the common flu.Dextromethorphan does not treat a cough caused by smoking.This leaflet does not list all the brands or forms of medication that are available.Guaiasorb DM can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Guaiasorb DM

If you experience symptoms indicative of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat - seek medical assistance immediately!

Guaiasorb DM may cause serious side effects. Guaiasorb DM should be stopped immediately, and you should consult your doctor if:

  • Mood changes
  • Headache or severe
  • Feeling like you could pass out or dizziness;

Guaiasorb DM can cause the following side effects:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Diarrhoea;
  • Feeling nervous, restless, or anxious

Warnings

If you've taken an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days (such as isocarboxazid or linezolid), you should not take this medication.

Before you take this drug

You should not use Guaiasorb DM if MAO inhibitors have been taken in the last 14 days. It is possible that a dangerous drug interaction will occur. MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (selegiline), rasagiline (methylene blue injection), and tranylcypromine.

If you suffer from:

  • A cough that produces mucus
  • Asthma, emphysema, or chronic lung disease.

Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.This medication may contain phenylalanine. If you have phenylketonuria, check the label of your medication.

How to take Guaiasorb DM?

Follow the directions on the label or those prescribed by your physician. Cold and cough medicines are only to be used for a short time until symptoms have cleared up.Follow the directions on the label when giving cough medicine or cold medicine. Never use cough and cold medicine to put a child to sleep.Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon).It may be necessary to shake the liquid prior to measuring a dose. Please follow all instructions listed on your label.Do not chew, crush, or break the extended-release tablet.The granules can be sprinkled directly on your tongue. Swallow immediately.While taking this medication, drink extra fluids in order to loosen congestion and lubricate the throat.If your symptoms don't improve within 7 days or you experience a fever, rash, or headache, call your doctor.Tell the surgeon if you've taken the medicine in the last few days and if you are going to need any kind of surgery.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Guaiasorb DM can be used as needed, and you don't need to follow a schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip any missed one and go straight back on track with your schedule.Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Reach out immediately if a poisonous substance comes your way or call 1-800-222-1222 for immediate support.

What should be avoided?

You should avoid driving or other hazardous activities until you are sure how Guaiasorb DM affects you. Your reaction could be inadequate to handle certain circumstances.Alcohol consumption can have side effects when taken with this medication.Before using any other cold or cough medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist if they contain similar ingredients.

Interaction with other drug

Use this medicine only if you are not taking any other medications that can cause drowsiness, slow breathing, or anxiety (such as an opioid, muscle relaxants, or medicines for seizures).Before using this medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you also use any other medications, such as vitamins and herbal remedies.
