Fulyzaq

Drug class: antidiarrheals.
Generic name: Crofelemer.

In the U.S., Fulyzaq has been discontinued. There may be equivalent products if generic versions have been approved by the FDA.

What is Fulyzaq?

Fulyzaq is an anti-diarrheal drug used by adults with HIV (human immunodeficiency or acquired immunodeficiency) or AIDS. Fulyzaq can be used to treat diarrhea not caused by a viral or bacterial infection. People who take antiviral drugs to treat HIV and AIDS are given Fulyzaq. Fulyzaq does not treat HIV or AIDS. Fulyzaq can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to crofelemer, then Fulyzaq is not for you. Tell your doctor about any symptoms of illness, such as diarrhea and vomiting. Fulyzaq is in FDA pregnancy category C. There is no information on whether it will harm an unborn child. If you plan to get pregnant or are currently pregnant, tell your doctor. Crofelemer does not pass into breast milk. It is also unknown if it can harm a baby who is nursing. Breastfeeding mothers must not take this medicine. Fulyzaq should not be given to anyone younger than 18 without consulting a doctor.

How to take Fulyzaq?

Your doctor may order medical tests before you begin treatment with Fulyzaq to ensure that you don't have infectious diarrhea.Do not take this medication in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than prescribed. Take only what is indicated; exceeding or prolonging its usage could be dangerous and should only ever be undertaken if necessary. Fulyzaq can be taken with or without food. Avoid crushing, chewing, or breaking a delayed-release tablet. It is best to swallow it whole. Store items away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as possible after remembering to take your missed dose, do so immediately. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching shortly thereafter, skip any missed dosage as opposed to increasing doses in an attempt to make up for lost time. It would not be prudent for additional medicine to be taken in an effort to make up for lost ones.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes restrictions in terms of food, beverage or activity consumption or participation, be sure to follow his or her directions exactly.

Side effects of Fulyzaq

If you experience any of the following signs of an allergy to Fulyzaq, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, or swelling of the throat.

Fulyzaq should be stopped immediately, and you should consult your doctor if:

  • Dark urine (jaundice):
  • Wheezing, chest pain, and difficulty breathing
  • Worsening diarrhea.

Fulyzaq can cause a variety of side effects.

  • Bloating, gas;
  • Cold symptoms include a stuffy nose, sneezing, and coughing.

Interaction with other drug

Fulyzaq may interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, vitamins, and supplements. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines you are taking and those you plan to take.
