What is Fosnetupitant and palonosetron?

Fosnetupitant is given with palonosetron to prevent nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The combination of fosnetupitant, palonosetron, and a steroid known as dexamethasone is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. The combination of fosnetupitant and palonosetron can help prevent nausea and other symptoms that occur during chemotherapy or later (delayed nausea or vomiting). This medication guide does not list all possible uses for palonosetron and fosnetupitant.

Side effects of Fosnetupitant and palonosetron

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, chest pain, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat. Serotonin syndrome symptoms include hallucinations and agitation. They can also include sweating, shivering, or a rapid heartbeat; stiffness of the muscles; twitching of the muscles; loss of coordination; as well as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Side effects of fosnetupitant or palonosetron include:

  • Headache;
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Skin redness;
  • Upset stomach, constipation

Before you take this drug

Palonosetron and fosnetupitants may harm an unborn child.Notify your doctor immediately if you suspect that you may be pregnant.

Inform your doctor of any of the following issues:

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Allergic reaction to medicine used for nausea and vomiting such as Dolasetron, Anzemet, Ondansetron (Zofran), or Palonosetron (Aloxi)

Make sure you tell your doctor if you are also taking stimulant medicines, opioid medications, herbal supplements, or medication for mental illness or Parkinson’s disease. They may cause serotonin-related syndrome, a serious condition caused by fosnetupitant or palonosetron. It is not recommended that you breastfeed if you are using fosnetupitant or palonosetron. Anyone younger than 18 is not allowed to use fosnetupitant or palonosetron.

How to take Fosnetupitant and palonosetron?

The medicine will not cure the nausea or vomiting that you may already be experiencing. A healthcare provider will inject fosnetupitant (also known as palonosetron) and fosnetupitant into your vein about 30 minutes prior to chemotherapy. Dexamethasone is also taken 30 minutes prior to chemotherapy. You may be required to continue taking it for three days afterwards. You should follow your doctor's instructions for dosage very closely.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for nausea or vomiting: chemotherapy-induced
Start 30 minutes before chemotherapy Day 1 with a 30-minute IV infusion of fosnetupitant (235 mg) and palonosetron (0.25 mg).
ADDITIONAL MEDICATIONS
Highly Emetogenic Cancer Treatment, including Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy
Day 1: Dexamethasone oral, 12 mg, 30 minutes before chemotherapy
Days two to four: Dexamethasone oral, 8 mg once daily
Use: When combined with dexamethasone to prevent acute and delayed nausea and vomiting that may occur during initial and repeated courses of chemotherapy with high emetogenic content.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Fosnetupitant is administered as a single dose, and there is no daily schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Interaction with other drug

Sometimes taking multiple medications together is not recommended, as some drugs could affect each other and potentially lead to adverse side effects or reduce effectiveness. Fosnetupitant, palonosetron and other drugs may interact, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal products. Please inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking or planning to begin or stop taking in order to keep yourself safe from potential interactions.
