What is Cefiderocol?
Cefiderocol (pronounced SEF-a-lo SPOR-in), a cephalosporin antibacterial, is used in the treatment of serious bladder or renal infections among adults. Cefiderocol can also be used to treat adults with pneumonitis that developed while in the hospital or on a ventilator. Cefiderocol can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.
Side effects of Cefiderocol
If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling and feverishness; seek medical advice immediately.or sore throat, pain in the eyes, or skin irritation), or if your skin has rashes that are red or purple and cause blisters or peeling, seek emergency medical attention.
Cefiderocol can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Severe stomach pain; bloody or watery diarrhoea (even months after the last dose);
- Tremor, rigid muscles, or a seizure;
- White patches or sores on the lips or inside of your mouth;
- Low sodium level: leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, increased thirst, urination or numbness, muscle weakness, or a limp feeling.
Cefiderocol side effects may include:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation;
- Mouth sores;
- Cough;
- Abnormal liver function tests
- Headache;
- Rash;
- Pain, redness, itching, or swelling around the needle
There may be other side effects.Call your physician immediately if any symptoms appear; otherwise contact the FDA's Patient Reporting Hotline at 1-800-FDA-1088 if any do.
Warnings
Cefiderocol may cause serious or even life-threatening allergies. Inform your doctor of any allergies you may have to antibiotics, including penicillin.
Before you take this drug
Cefiderocol may cause severe or even life-threatening reactions.
- Cefadroxil is also known as cefoxitin (cefdinir), cefuroxime (cefuroxime), Keflex, Omnicef, and other names.
- Avibactam, relebactam, sulbactam, tazobactam, vaborbactam, etc.
- Amoxicillin is available in many forms, including Amoxil (Amoxil), Augmentin (Moxatag), dicloxacillin (oxacillin), ampicillin, and penicillin.
Inform your physician of any of the following issues:
- An allergy to penicillin (especially)
- Kidney disease (or dialysis if you have it);
- A seizure;
- Liver disease
- Colitis is one of the most common intestinal disorders.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.
How to take Cefiderocol
Take note of any instructions or guides included with your medication and follow them carefully. Follow the directions on the label.Cefiderocol can be injected directly into a vein.The medicine should be taken slowly over a period of 3 hours.If you're not sure how to use an injectable, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
Cefiderocol is mixed with a liquid, then further diluted in an IV bag with another liquid. Only make an injection when you are prepared to administer it. If the colour of your medicine has changed or if it has particles, call your pharmacist.Never reuse a syringe or needle. Place them in an impervious container that cannot puncture and dispose of them according to local or state laws. Keep away from children and pets.
Cefiderocol can be taken for up to 14 days.Continue to take this medication even if you notice an improvement in your symptoms. If you skip doses, your infection could become resistant to the medication. Cefiderocol does not treat a virus, such as the flu or a cold.Cefiderocol can interfere with certain medical tests. Tell your doctor that you use cefiderocol.
Store vials inside the original carton in a fridge. Protect against light.Mix a diluent in the vial and store at room temperature. Further dilute into an IV bag within an hour.After diluting your mixture in an IV bag, store the bag in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to six hours after diluting. Protect from light.You must use the IV bag within six hours after it has reached room temperature.Each IV bag can only be used once. After one use, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside.

Adult dose for pyelonephritis:
Every 8 hours, 2 g IV for 7–14 days

Patients with crcl between 60 and 119 ml/min are recommended to take this medication.
Use: Treatment for complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), caused by susceptible Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter cloacae complex.
Adult dose for urinary tract infection:
Every 8 hours, 2 g IV for 7–14 days

Patients with crcl between 60 and 119 ml/min are recommended to take this medication.
Use: Treatment for complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis) caused by susceptible Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aneruginosa, and Enterobacter complexes.
Adult dose for nosocomial pneumonia:
Every 8 hours, 2 g IV for 7–14 days

Uses: Used for treating hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by Acinetobacter baumannii complex bacteria such as E. Coli. Coli, E. Cloacae complex, K pneumoniae, P. Aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens
What happens if I miss the dose?
Unless otherwise instructed by your healthcare provider, call your provider immediately if you miss a dose and require instructions on what steps need to be taken next.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect poison ingestion and for medical assistance.
What should be avoided?
Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. If you experience diarrhoea that is bloody or watery, tell your doctor.
Interaction with other drug
Cefiderocol can be affected by other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the other medications you take.
