What is Flura-Loz?

Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel and helps to prevent dental caries. Fluoride can be used to prevent tooth decay in people who drink water with low fluoride levels (less than 0.06 parts per million). This medication guide does not list all the uses of fluoride.

Side effects of Flura-Loz

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or facial or throat swelling - seek medical assistance immediately!

Flura-Loz may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Very upset stomach
  • Vomiting and nausea.
  • Any changes to the appearance of teeth, such as staining or pitting,

Before you take this drug

If the fluoride level in your water exceeds 0.6 parts per billion (ppb), you should avoid using fluoride. You can contact your local water provider to determine the fluoride content in your water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can provide you with information on water fluoride levels in the United States.

If you:

  • Have you ever had sores, ulcers, or sores on your lips?
  • You are pregnant or nursing.

How to take Flura-Loz?

Read and follow all instructions included with your medication, including label directions. The amount of fluoride in your water is based on both your age and the level of fluoride. You do not have to take this medication if your water contains more than 0.6 ppm fluoride. Follow all instructions carefully when administering this medicine to your child. Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon). You can take the liquid fluoride (drops) undiluted or mix it with food or liquid. This mixture can be consumed immediately. You should not store it for future use. You can dissolve or chew the chewable tablet in your mouth prior to swallowing it. This medicine is best taken at night after brushing your teeth. After taking fluoride, do not rinse your mouth or eat anything. Fluoride is beneficial for your teeth. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip any missed one altogether; never double up on any medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. The symptoms of an overdose may include sudden pain in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Other symptoms can include diarrhea or drooling.

What should be avoided?

After taking fluoride, avoid drinking or eating dairy products like milk or yogurt for 1 hour. Avoid calcium-fortified drinks for at least 1 hour after taking the fluoride. Use only the laxatives or antacids that your doctor has prescribed. Some antacids and laxatives contain an ingredient that can inhibit your body's ability to absorb fluoride.

Interaction with other drug

Fluoride can be less effective if taken with certain medicines. Take your fluoride dose one hour before taking any of the medicines listed below:

  • An antacid;
  • A laxative;
  • A mineral or multivitamin supplement that contains magnesium, calcium, or aluminum

Fluoride can be affected by other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
