Generic name: Fluoride ([FLOR-ide])
Brand names:  Fluoritab, Fluura-Loz Flura Tab, and Altaflor Fluorabon.

What is Fluoritab?

Fluoritab strengthens the enamel of teeth, which prevents dental caries. Fluoritab prevents tooth decay for people who drink water with low fluoride levels (less than 0.06 parts per million). Fluoritab can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Fluoritab

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling to lips, face, tongue or throat - seek medical assistance immediately!

Fluoritab may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Very upset stomach
  • Vomiting and nausea.
  • Any changes to the appearance of teeth, such as staining or pitting,

Your symptoms could range from less serious side effects or no side effects at all. There may be other side effects. For any medical advice concerning potential symptoms, call your physician immediately; to report side effects directly, the FDA can be reached at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Fluoritab should not be used if your water contains more than 0.6 parts-per-million (ppm) of fluoride. Follow all instructions carefully when administering fluoritab.

Before you take this drug

Fluoritab should not be used if your water contains more than 0.6 parts-per-million (ppm). You can contact your local water provider to determine the fluoride content in your water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can provide you with information on the Fluoritab water content in the United States.

If you:

  • Have you ever had sores, ulcers, or other mouth problems?
  • You are pregnant or nursing.

How to take Fluoritab?

Read and follow all instructions that accompany your medication, whether written or verbal.Follow the directions on the label. The dose of fluoritab is determined by your age and the amount of this medicine in your water. Fluoritab is not necessary if your water contains more than 0.6 ppm fluoride. Follow all instructions carefully when administering this medicine to your child. Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon). You can take Fluoritab liquid drops undiluted or mix them with food or liquid. This mixture can be consumed immediately.Your first priority should not be storing it for future use.. You can dissolve or chew the chewable tablet in your mouth prior to swallowing it. This medicine is best taken at night after brushing your teeth. After taking fluoritab, do not rinse your mouth or eat anything. Fluoritab is best taken regularly for maximum benefit. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. The symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Other symptoms can include diarrhea or drooling.

What should be avoided?

You should avoid dairy products like milk and yogurt for 1 hour following the administration of Fluoritab. Avoid calcium-fortified drinks for at least 1 hour after taking Fluoritab. Use only the laxatives or antacids that your doctor has prescribed. Some laxatives and antacids contain an ingredient that can inhibit fluoritab absorption.

Interaction with other drug

Fluoritab can be less effective if taken with certain medicines. Take this medicine 1 hour before taking any of the medicines listed below:

  • An antacid;
  • A laxative;
  • A mineral or multivitamin supplement that contains magnesium, calcium, aluminum, or zinc

Fluoritab may interact with other drugs, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Informing your physician of all medications you are currently taking as well as those you discontinue or start to use is critical for optimal health and should always remain part of a healthcare team's duties.
