What is Eletriptan?

Eletriptan is a medication used in the treatment of migraine headaches with and without an aura in adults. Eletriptan is only used to help treat the symptoms of a migraine that has already started. It cannot stop headaches or decrease the frequency of attacks.Eletriptan is not recommended to treat a typical tension headache, a headache that results in loss of movement on the opposite part of the body, or any other headache that appears to be distinct from your typical migraine headaches. Only use eletriptan if your condition is confirmed by a physician for migraine headaches.Eletriptan can also be employed for other purposes that are not covered in this guideline.

Side effects of Eletriptan

Contact a medical professional immediately. Get medical attention immediately if you notice symptoms or warning signs of an allergic response, such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of your lips, face, or tongue.

Eletriptan may cause serious side effects. Consult your doctor immediately. If you suffer from:

  • Rapid, slow, or irregular heart rate;
  • Suddenly extreme stomach pain that is sudden and severe (especially immediately after eating), constipation or diarrhea, weight loss;
  • Fever, diarrhea is bloody.
  • Numbness, tingling, chill sensation, or burning in your toes or feet
  • Tension or a heavy sensation on your legs. A pale or blue-colored look in your toes or fingers;
  • Intense headache, fuzzy vision, or pounding sensations in your neck or in your ears
  • Symptoms of a stroke—sudden weakness or numbness (especially for one leg), as well as sudden, extreme headaches, speech lisping, or issues with balance or vision.

Eletriptan may cause serious side effects. Stop taking it and notify your physician immediately in case you experience:

  • Heart attack symptoms: chest pressure or pain, expanding into your shoulder or jaw, nausea, sweating

Get medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms of serotonin disorder, for example: agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, rapid heart rate, stiffness of muscles, or twitching. Also, you may experience loss of coordination, sickness, nausea, and diarrhea.

Common adverse effects of eletriptan could include:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Nausea;
  • Fatigue, weakness.

Warnings

Eletriptan should not be taken if you have ever experienced heart disease, coronary artery disease, blood circulation problems, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver disease or have had a recent heart attack or stroke; or if your headache differs significantly from its typical migraine headaches.

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to use the drug eletriptan if there is an allergy to the substance or if you suffer from

  • Heart issues or stroke (including "mini-stroke");
  • Are you suffering from circulation issues affecting your legs, arms, stomach, intestines and kidneys
  • A heart disorder called wolff-parkinson-white syndrome;
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure is not something to take lightly or try to manage.
  • A headache that is like a migraine is not your typical headache.

Don't take the drug eletriptan for more than 24 hours prior to or after taking another migraine medication, such as:

  • Meds such as Eletriptan--almotriptan, frovatriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan, sumatriptan and zolmitriptan; or other anticonvulsant medications may help provide relief;
  • Ergot medicine: dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, ergonovine, and methylergonovine.

Do not use eletriptan in the next 72 hours prior to or following taking troleandomycin, clarithromycin, itraconazole or ketoconazole, nefazodone, ritonavir, or nelfinavir.

Notify your physician immediately if you have ever suffered from:

  • Kidney or liver disease;
  • Heart issues or strokes;
  • Risk factors that could lead to coronary arterial disease (such as high blood cholesterol, high pressure, and diabetes, menopausal smoking, having an ancestor with a background of coronary diseases, being overweight, or being older than 40 and male)

Check with your physician to see if you are also taking stimulant medicines, opioid medications, herbal products, or medications to treat depression or mental illness. Parkinson's disease, migraine headaches, severe infections, or the prevention of vomiting and nausea These medications may have a relationship with eletriptan and can result in a serious illness known as serotonin syndrome.Inform your doctor if you are expecting or planning to be pregnant. It isn't known if it will harm the unborn baby. But experiencing migraine headaches during pregnancy could cause complications such as excessive blood pressure or eclampsia (dangerously elevated blood pressure), which can result in medical issues for both the mother and baby. The benefits of treating migraines could outweigh the risks for the baby.It might not be safe to breastfeed when using the drug eletriptan. Consult your physician about any potential risks.Eletriptan is not a drug that has been approved for use by anyone less than 18 years of age.

How to take Eletriptan?

Follow all instructions listed on your prescription label, and read any medication guides or instruction sheets provided with your medications.Get electriptan taken as soon as you start to feel migraine-like symptoms.When you take a tablet, if your headache doesn't completely disappear or is absent and then returns, take a second tablet 2 hours after the first. Do not exceed eighty mg of eletriptan within 24 hours. If your symptoms haven't changed, talk to your doctor before taking any further tablets.Consult your physician if your headache doesn't go away even after the first tablet of eletriptan.If you are taking eletriptan for long-term use, the heart's function could require a check by using an electrocardiograph (sometimes called an EKG).

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Migraine:

Use only if a specific medical diagnosis has been made.

Initial dosage: 20 mg or 40 mg orally once
If there is a response to the initial dose, a subsequent dose could be administered at least two hours later if the migraine recurs or if symptoms persist.
Maximum dose: 80 mg in a 24-hour period
Comments:
Doses should be customized since responses can vary. In clinical trials, positive results were seen at doses of 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg; however, an increase in adverse reactions was noted with the dose of 80 mg.
The drug is not recommended for treating hemiplegic or basilar migraines, as these patients have a higher risk of stroke.
The safety of treatment for the average of three migraines over 30 days has not been proven.
Use: For the immediate treatment of migraine, with and without aura.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Because eletriptan is only used when required, it doesn't have a regular dosing schedule. Contact your physician immediately in the event that your symptoms don't improve following treatment with the drug.

What should be avoided?

Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you are aware of the effects of eletriptan on your body. The way you react could be affected.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor about any other medications you take, including antidepressants.Other drugs can interact with the effects of eletriptan, such as medications that are prescribed and available over the counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Inform your doctor about all your medications currently used and any medication you begin or stop taking.
