What is Lefamulin (oral/injection)?

Lefamulin can be used in the treatment of certain forms of pneumonitis among adults.Lefamulin can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.

Side effects of Lefamulin (oral/injection)

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue

Lefamulin can cause severe side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe abdominal pain bloody or watery diarrhoea (even months after the last dose)
  • Constipation. Leg cramps.

Lefamulin can cause a number of side effects.

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea;
  • Sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Low potassium
  • Headache;
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Pain, bruising, or swelling where the medication was injected.

Warnings

Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking, as well as any new ones. Some drugs are not to be taken together, and others can cause drug interactions.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to lefamulin, then it is best not to use this product.Many drugs have dangerous interactions and can cause serious side effects. Lefamulin and some drugs shouldn't be taken together. If you are also taking certain medicines to treat infections, asthma, heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, mental illnesses, cancer, HIV, malaria, or HIV, your doctor might change the treatment plan.

If you've ever:

  • A heart rhythm disorder, especially if it is being treated with medication.
  • Long QT syndrome;
  • Liver diseases
  • Kidney disease or dialysis (if applicable)

Before starting the treatment, you may be required to take a pregnancy test.

Lefamulin can harm an unborn child. Prevent pregnancy by using effective contraception while taking lefamulin and at least two days after the last dose. Inform your doctor immediately if you fall pregnant.Do not use lefamulin within two days of using it. Throw away any collected milk if you are pumping breastmilk during that time. You should not give it to your child.

How to take Lefamulin (oral/injection)?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all the directions. Follow the directions on your prescription label.Lefamulin is taken orally.Lefamulin orally should be taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal and two hours after.Lefamulin is taken orally in a glass of 6 to 8 ounces of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Swallow it whole.Lefamulin is injected into the vein. Your healthcare provider may give you your first dose and teach you to use it properly.Please read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medication. If you do not understand, consult a pharmacist or doctor immediately.Lefamulin must first be diluted with liquid before use. Unless your injectable medications come prepackaged for you, ensure you know how to prepare and store them yourself.Only prepare an injection when you're ready to administer it. If the colour of your medicine changes or if it contains particles, do not se it. For new medication, call your pharmacist.Lefamulin must be injected slowly and can take up to 60 minutes.Your liver will require frequent blood tests.Even if you feel better quickly, continue to take this medication for as long as prescribed. You can get infections resistant to medications if you skip doses. Lefamulin does not work on viruses such as the flu and common cough.Keep the tablets away from heat and moisture.Do not freeze lefamulin. Keep the diluent bag at room temperature.Every vial or bottle is only for one-time use. After one use, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside.You can store lefamulin injection for 48 hours or more at room temperature after mixing it with the diluent.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for pneumonia:

Every 12 hours, 150 mg intravenous for five to seven days
Take 600mg orally every 12 hours.
Comments:
You may switch to an oral dose to finish the therapy.
Use: For the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia due to susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-susceptible isolates), Haemophilus influenzae, Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydophila pneumoniae

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you miss a dose, take it immediately.. Skip the dose if the next dose is in 8 hours or less. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Antibiotic medicine can cause diarrhea. This may indicate a new illness. Call your doctor if you experience diarrhea that's watery or bleeding.Lefamulin should not be shared with anyone else, even if the other person has similar symptoms.

Interaction with other drug

At times it may not be safe to take several drugs at the same time.Some medications can cause side effects that increase or decrease the effectiveness of another drug you are taking.Lefamulin may cause serious heart problems. You are at greater risk if you use other medications for asthma, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, HIV, depression, or mental illnesses.Lefamulin can be affected by many drugs. These include prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. This list does not include all interactions. Inform your doctor of all medications you are currently taking and those that you will stop or start using.
