What is Dutasteride and tamsulosin?

Combination medicine Dutasteride with Tamsulosin treats benign prostate hyperplasia in men who have an enlarged prostate. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of dutasteride or tamsulosin.

Side effects of Dutasteride and tamsulosin

If you experience symptoms of an allergic response (hives or difficulty breathing, swelling on your face or in your throat) or a severe reaction to the skin (fever or sore neck, burning or itching eyes, skin pain or blistering, or a red or purple rash with blistering or peeling), seek emergency medical attention.

Dutasteride may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • Penis erections that are painful or last 4 hours or more

Some of the common side effects that may occur with dutasteride or tamsulosin include:

  • Reduced libido;
  • Semen release during sex is reduced;
  • Impotence
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Dizziness;
  • Runny nose

There may be other side effects. Call your physician if experiencing side effects; otherwise contact the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 to report adverse events.

Warnings

Dutasteride or tamsulosin must never be administered or handled by women, children, or adolescents.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to dutasteride or finasteride. This medicine should not be taken if you are also taking tamsulosin or other similar medicines, such as doxazosin or prazosin. Dutasteride or tamsulosin must never be taken by women, children, or teenagers. Dutasteride is absorbed through the surface of the skin. Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin's surface. Women and children must never handle dutasteride or tamsulosin medications directly. Women should avoid handling this medication due to possible birth defect risks; pregnant and/or intending-to-be pregnant women must not handle its capsules. If a woman accidentally gets in contact with the medication through a leaking cap, she should wash it with soap and warm water.

Tell your doctor about any of the following:

  • High or low blood pressure
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Prostate cancer;
  • Sulfa drugs can cause an allergic reaction.

This medicine can increase your chances of getting prostate cancer. This is something you should discuss with your doctor. Dutasteride or tamsulosin may affect your pupils. Tell the surgeon if you are having eye surgery that you use this medication, even if it is no longer taken.

How to take Dutasteride and tamsulosin?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. Dutasteride, tamsulosin, and other medications should be taken 30 minutes after eating each meal. Do this every day at the same time. Do not open, crush, chew, or break the capsule. Tests to measure your PSA are required. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for benign prostatic hyperplasia:
Dutasteride-Tamsulosin orally, once daily, approximately 30 minutes following the same meal.
Use: Treatment for symptomatic benign prostate hyperplasia in men with enlarged prostrates.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Do not take your dose more than 30 minutes after eating. If it's almost time to take your next dose, skip the missed dose. Never take two doses in one go. If you have missed doses for several days in a row, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Avoid taking medications for erectile disorder. Don't donate blood if you are taking dutasteride or tamsulosin, and wait at least six months after the last dose. If a woman is pregnant and receives blood containing this medication, it could lead to birth defects. Your body could quickly become dizzy if you stand up too rapidly from sitting or lying position. Before engaging in any hazardous activities or driving under the influence of medication, make sure that you fully understand its effect on you.

Interaction with other drug

It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications together. Some drugs may affect the blood levels of drugs that you are taking, which can increase side effects and make them less effective. Dutasteride or tamsulosin may be affected by other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Inform your doctor of all the other medications you take.
