What is Dristan Nasal?

Oxymetazoline shrinks the blood vessels of the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause congestion in the nasal passages. Dristan Nasal is a nasal spray that provides temporary relief from nasal congestion caused by allergies, the common cold, or other causes. Dristan Nasal can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Dristan Nasal

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing and swelling to your lips, face, tongue or throat. Please seek medical assistance immediately.

Dristan Nasal may cause serious side effects. Dristan nasal should be stopped immediately, and you should consult your doctor if:

  • Symptoms that persist or worsen;
  • After using nasal spray, you may experience severe burning or stinging.
  • Chest pain is characterized by a fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • Anxiety, confusion, or a severe headache can all be symptoms of anxiety.

Dristan nasal side effects may include:

  • A mild stinging or burning of the nose
  • Sneezing;
  • Runny nose

Similar/related drugs

Epinephrine topical, pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine nasal spray and sodium chloride nasal solution were prescribed, along with AFRI for use as preventatives against acute episodes.

Warnings

Dristan Nasal (for the nose) provides temporary relief from nasal congestion due to allergies or common colds. If you experience severe burning in your nose or persistent symptoms after using Dristan nasal, call your doctor immediately.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to Dristan, do not use it. If you have other medical conditions or concerns, check with your physician or pharmacist whether taking this medicine will be safe.

  • Heart disease high blood tension, coronary arterial disease
  • Diabetes;
  • A thyroid disorder
  • Urination or prostate problems

FDA pregnancy class C There is no information on whether Dristan nasal will harm an unborn child. If you plan to get pregnant or are already pregnant, tell your doctor. There is no way to know if oxymetazoline nasal can pass into breast milk or if it will harm a baby who is nursing. You should tell your doctor if your baby is breastfed.

How to take Dristan Nasal?

Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration. Use the recommended dose and do not exceed it. If you use the medication for too long or too frequently, it may cause your nasal congestion to improve and then return. If your symptoms persist after three days of treatment, call your doctor. This medication should not be shared with anyone else, even if the other person has similar symptoms. Shared nasal spray bottles can spread an infection.

Use the nasal solution (nose drops):

  • Blow your nose softly. Lean your head as far back as you can or hang your head from the bed. Place the correct number of drops in your nose by holding the dropper above your nose.
  • Sit up, bend your head forward slightly, and then gently move it left and right. For a few moments, keep your head bowed forward while seated.
  • After using the nasal drops, avoid sneezing and blowing your nose.

How to use nasal spray

  • Blow your nose softly. Insert the bottle tip into one nostril while keeping your head up. Close the other nostril with your finger. Inhale quickly and spray the medicine gently into your nose. Use the spray on your other nostril.
  • After using nasal spray, do not blow your nose.

Use the nasal spray no more than twice in 24 hours. Do not use soap or water to wash the spray bottle tip. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Maintain a room temperature environment free from moisture and heat when in storage; when not being used, ensure the bottle remains tightly sealed to preserve freshness and prevent unwanted airborne dust particles entering through any openings in its lid.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as you realize, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, even if its scheduled time for taking has come and gone. Do not attempt to compensate by taking extra medicine in order to make up for missed ones.

What happens if I overdose?

Should someone accidentally consume medication, seek emergency medical assistance right away or contact Poison Help immediately at 1-800-222-1222. Dristan nasal should be kept out of the reach of children. Certain nasal medications may cause serious medical issues in young children who accidentally swallow or suck on the medicine.

What should be avoided?

Regardless of whether it be related to food, beverages or activities - if your doctor suggests any restrictions with regard to diet, beverage consumption or activity then be sure to heed their advice and adhere to what they instruct you.

Interaction with other drug

If you also use any of these drugs, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether it's safe to use Dristan nasal.

  • An antidepressant—amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline;
  • Ergot medicine: ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, and methylergonovine;
  • An mao inhibitor—isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Dristan Nasal may interact with other drugs not listed here. Inform your doctor of all the medications you take. Included are prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Never start a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
