What is Diuril?

Diuril (a water pill) is a diuretic that treats fluid accumulation in patients with congestive cardiac failure or kidney or liver disorders. It is also used to treat edema due to taking estrogen or steroids. Diuril can also be used to treat hypertension. Diuril can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Diuril

If you experience symptoms of an allergic response (hives or difficulty breathing, swelling on your face or in your throat) or a severe reaction to the skin (fever or sore neck, burning or itching eyes, skin pain or blisters, or a red or purple rash with blistering or peeling), seek emergency medical attention.

Diuril may cause serious side effects. Dial your doctor immediately if:

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • Little or no urination
  • Severe pain spreading from your upper abdomen to your back
  • Low blood cell count—pale, yellowed or whitish skin, dark urine, fever, or easy bruising and bleeding;
  • Signs of electrolyte depletion include dry mouth, increased thirst, nausea, constipation, muscle cramps and weakness, leg pains or cramps, dizziness, and drowsiness. Other symptoms are fatigue, restlessness, rapid heartbeats, or tingly feelings.

Diuril can cause the following side effects:

  • Dizziness, spinning sensation;
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps;
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle spasm
  • Impotence and sexual problems

Warnings

Diuril should not be used if you have difficulty urinating or are allergic to sulfa drugs.

Before you take this drug

Diuril should not be used if you have an allergy to it or if

  • You are unable to urinate.
  • You are allergic to sulfa medications.

Notify your doctor of any of the following issues:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Asthma;
  • Gout;
  • Diabetes;
  • Lupus;
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides - forms of fat found in blood - levels may indicate health conditions like cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol, such as cardiovascular artery clogging.

Diuril does not cause birth defects in unborn babies; please notify your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while using it or plan on becoming pregnant while using it. Breastfeeding mothers must avoid taking this medicine. Diuril should not be used by anyone under the age of 18.

How to take Diuril?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow the directions. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. You must take the medication exactly as prescribed. Before measuring a dose, shake the orally suspended liquid.Please use either the dosing device provided, or an alternative dose-measuring tool (other than spoon). Injections of diuril are given into veins. If you cannot take the medication by mouth, a healthcare provider can give you an injection. If you experience any pain or swelling when Diuril injections are administered, tell your caregivers. It may be necessary to adhere to a special diet in order to prevent your potassium levels from falling too low. You should follow the instructions given by your doctor or dietitian.Discover which foods will best help manage your condition.

Your blood pressure must be regularly checked. You may experience low blood pressure due to vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating. Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating are all examples. If you have diarrhea or vomiting, call your doctor. It can interfere with certain medical tests. Diuril can affect the results of certain medical tests. Even if you are feeling well, continue to take this medication if you have high blood pressure. Often, high blood pressure has no symptoms. Blood pressure medication may be needed for the rest of your life. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat and light to preserve quality and keep products at an ideal state of preservation.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include confusion, an uneven heartbeat, extreme thirst, increased urine, muscle weakness, feeling hot or thirsty, or not being able to urinate.

What should be avoided?

Diuril and alcohol can have side effects. You could become dizzy if you suddenly change positions from sitting or lying. Drink enough fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during exercise or in hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much liquid is as dangerous as not drinking enough.

Interaction with other drug

Diuril can make you feel dizzy. Before taking an opioid, sleeping pill, muscle relaxant, anxiety medicine, or medication for seizures or anxiety, consult your doctor.

Tell your doctor all of your other medications, including:

  • Other blood pressure medications
  • Colestipol or cholestyramine
  • Lithium;
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medication;
  • Steroid medicine;
  • Nsaids are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (nonsteroidal analgesic drugs), such as aspirin (Advil), ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, and others.
