Ditropan XL

Generic Name: Oxybutynin
Drug class: Urinary Antispasmodics

In the U.S., Ditropan has been stopped. There may be equivalents if generic versions have been approved and made available by the FDA.

What is Ditropan XL?

Ditropan XL is used to reduce muscle spasms in the bladder and urinary system. Ditropan XL treats symptoms of an overactive bladder such as frequent or urgency urination (or urine leakage), incontinence, and increased nighttime urination. Ditropan XL can also be used for children aged at least six years with an overactive bladder due to a neurological condition, such as spina bifida.

Warnings

Ditropan XL should not be used if you suffer from untreated or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, a blockage of your digestive system (stomach, intestines), or are unable to urinate. Tell your doctor if, before using Ditropan XL, you suffer from glaucoma, liver or kidney diseases, myasthenia graveis, ulcerative colitis, a blockage of your stomach or intestines, or a stomach disorder like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and slow digestion.

Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise and hot weather. Oxybutynin may decrease sweating and make you more susceptible to heatstroke. This medication can cause blurred or double vision, and it may affect your ability to think clearly.Be mindful when driving or doing any task that requires attentiveness and the ability to see clearly. Oxybutynin may interact with numerous medications; inform your healthcare provider of all those you take. Included are prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, vitamin, and vitamin products. Never start a new medicine without consulting your doctor. List all of your medications and give them to every healthcare provider you see. If you experience serious side effects, such as extreme thirst, stomach pain, constipation, pain when you urinate, or pain or burning, stop using the medication and contact your doctor.

Before you take this drug

Ditropan XL should not be used if:

  • Untreated or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Your digestive tract, such as your stomach or intestines; may become blocked.
  • If you're unable to urinate,

Tell your doctor if:

  • Glaucoma;
  • Hypertension and heart disease
  • Trouble urinating
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Dementia, parkinson's disease;
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Prostate disorder;
  • A nerve disorder that can affect your heart rate or blood pressure;
  • Myasthenia gravis;
  • A stomach disorder, such as gastroesophageal retching disease( gerd), or slow digestion

Serious side effects are more common in older adults or those with kidney and liver disease. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.

How to take Ditropan XL?

Follow all instructions listed on your prescription label and read any medication guides or instruction sheets provided with it. Read all the instructions and directions that come with your prescription. Ditropan XL should be taken with a glass of water at the same time every day. Ditropan XL can be taken with or without food. Do not chew, crush, or break the extended-release tablet. The shell of the tablets is made to not be absorbed by or melted within the body. Some of the shell may be found in your stool. This is not a problem, and the medication will still be effective. Store tightly closed away from moisture, heat, and light.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include restlessness and tremors. They may also include hallucinations.

What should be avoided?

Ditropan XL can affect your reactions. Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you are familiar with how they will affect you. You may be unable to react. Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise and hot weather. Oxybutynin may decrease sweating, and you could be more susceptible to heatstroke. Alcohol consumption can have side effects when taken with this medication.

Side effects of Ditropan XL

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, or a sudden increase in your body temperature, call 911 immediately.

If you experience:

  • Constipation or severe abdominal pain
  • Hallucinations or confusion;
  • Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights
  • Little or no urination
  • Urination that is painful or difficult
  • Dehydration, dizziness, confusion, feeling thirsty, or less urination.

Ditropan xl may cause side effects such as:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Headache;
  • Dry mouth
  • Diarrhea, constipation.

Interaction with other drug

Ditropan XL can make you drowsy. Before taking an opioid, sleeping pill, muscle relaxer, or medicine to treat a seizure, ask your doctor.

Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:

  • Antiviral or antifungal medicine;
  • Bronchodilator asthma medication
  • Cold or allergy medicines ( Benadryl and others);
  • Medicine to treat overactive bowel;
  • Medicine to treat dementia
  • Parkinson's Disease Treatment;
  • Medicine to treat stomach issues, motion sickness, or irritable bowel syndrome
