Dexamethasone, neomycin, and polymyxin B (ophthalmic)

Brand names: Maxitrol (neomycin), Poly-Dex (neomycin), Ocu-Trol Ophthalmic, Dexacidin, and Dexasporin.
Forms of dosage: ophthalmic ointment (0.5 mg–3.5 mg/10000 units/g) and ophthalmic solution (1 mg–3.5 mg/10000 units/mL).

What is Dexamethasone ophthalmic, neomycin, and polymyxin B?

The combination of antibiotics and steroids Dexamethasone, Neomycin, and Polymyxin B (for the eye) is used to treat inflammation in the eye caused by eye injuries, radiation, or chemical burns. When there is an increased risk of infection around or in the eyes, dexamethasone, neomycin, and polymyxin-B are used. Side effects of Dexamethasone ophthalmic, neomycin, and polymyxin B

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy reaction, seek immediate medical attention: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue.

There are serious side effects associated with dexamethasone. If you experience:

  • Blurred vision, pain in the eyes, or seeing halos around lights
  • If you notice swelling, discomfort, or crusting, this could be a sign of infection.
  • Pain behind your eyes, sudden vision changes;
  • A wound that does not heal.

Some of the common side effects associated with dexamethasone (neomycin), polymyxin-B, or both may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Mild eye irritation

Warnings

This medicine should not be used if your eye is infected with a fungal infection or virus (including simplex herpes).

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if the patient is allergic to polymyxin, dexamethasone, or neomycin. It also shouldn't be taken if there are any fungal, viral, or bacterial infections in their eyes, including herpes.

If you've ever:

  • Glaucoma;
  • If you have cataracts or need surgery,
  • An allergic reaction can occur to medicines like neomycin.

This medication has not been linked with harming an unborn infant.Inform your doctor that you are expecting.

Breast-feeding may be unsafe while taking this medication. You should consult your physician about possible risks. This medicine should not be given to children without consulting a doctor.

How to take Dexamethasone ophthalmic, neomycin, and polymyxin B?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all the directions. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Before using any eye medications, always wash your hands with soap and water first. Applying eye drops requires nothing more than tilting back your head slightly and pulling down on your lower eyelid, then squeeze some drops through a dropper into a pocket created over each eyeball for 1 or 2 minutes while keeping eyes shut for one or two minutes - it really couldn't be simpler! Use only the prescribed number of drops. Apply the eye ointment by pulling down on your lower eyelid and tilting back slightly; create an indentation pocket in this position and squeeze a ribbon of eye ointment into it; keep eyes closed for one to two minutes while blinking gently before using tissue to wipe away any extra. If your symptoms don't improve within 2 days, call your doctor. You may require frequent eye pressure tests if you take this medication for more than 10 days. Keep this medication at room temperature. Store at room temperature. When not in use, keep the tube closed tightly. Keep the eyedrops upright when storing them.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for the next dose, skip the dose that was missed. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses of polymyxin, dexamethasone, and neomycin are not dangerous. If anyone accidentally swallows the medicine, seek emergency medical care or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.

What should be avoided?

This medicine should not be shared with anyone else, even if the other person has similar symptoms. You may experience blurred vision or impaired reactions. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how the medicine affects you.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs that you take are unlikely to affect the medicine used on your eyes. Many drugs interact. Inform your health care providers of all the medicines that you take, including prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbs.
