What is Daunorubicin?

Daunorubicin can be used as part of a combination chemotherapy treatment to treat leukemia. Daunorubicin can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.

Side effects of Daunorubicin

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergy reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling on lips, face throat or tongue

Daunorubicin may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Pain, swelling, irritation, or changes in the skin where the injection is given
  • Heart problems: swelling, rapid weight gain and shortness of breath
  • Low blood counts: fever; chills; fatigue; sores on the lips, hands, and feet.
  • You may have kidney disease if you experience swelling of your ankles or feet or a lack of urination.
  • Liver problems: loss of appetite, pain in the upper right corner of your stomach, fatigue, itchiness, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice

Some of the common side effects associated with daunorubicin include:

  • Dry mouth; bad breath
  • Red discoloration in the urine
  • Nausea, vomiting,
  • Hair loss.

Warnings

Daunorubicin can have dangerous effects on the heart. It may also cause bleeding and infections. If you experience chest pain, rapid weight gain, or shortness of breath, or if your symptoms include fever, chills, or fatigue, or if there is swelling, call your doctor immediately.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to daunorubicin, then it is best not to use this drug.

If you've ever:

  • Heart Disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver Disease
  • A weak immune system, caused by illness or certain medications.
  • If you've ever received doxorubicin or other drugs such as epirubicin (epirubicin), idarubicin, mitoxantrone, liposomal Daunorubicin, or Daunopome,

Daunorubicin can increase the risk of other leukemia types. Your doctor can tell you more about the risk that applies to your situation. Daunorubicin can harm an unborn child. Prevent pregnancy with effective contraception, and inform your doctor immediately if you fall pregnant. Daunorubicin should not be used while breastfeeding.

How to take Daunorubicin?

Daunorubicin can be infused into the vein. This injection will be given by a healthcare professional. You may be required to have your electrocardiogram (also known as an EKG) checked before you take each daunorubicin dose. You may need your kidney and liver functions tested. Other medications may be prescribed to prevent allergic reactions or serious side effects. Continue to use these medications as prescribed by your doctor. When daunorubicin injections are performed, tell your care providers if there is any pain or swelling in the area around the IV. If you accidentally come into contact with daunorubicin, wash your skin thoroughly in warm soapy water. Daunorubicin may increase the risk of infection or bleeding. Medical tests will be required frequently. These tests may delay your cancer treatment.

If you are unable to keep your appointment, call your doctor and ask for further instructions.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses are unlikely because this medication is administered by healthcare professionals in a medical environment.

What should be avoided?

Stay away from people with infections or illnesses. If you notice any signs of an infection, tell your doctor immediately.

Interaction with other drug

Daunorubicin may harm your liver if you are also taking certain medications for infection, tuberculosis (TB), birth control, hormonal replacement, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, or if seizures or pain are present.

Daunorubicin may be affected by other drugs, such as prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you will begin or stop taking.
