Cholestyramine

Generic Name: Cholestyramine
Brand names: Prevalite Packets and Prevalite Packets. Questran Light.
Form of dosage: oral powder for reconstitution (4.8 g, 5 g, 5.5 g, or 5.7 g sugar-free)
Bile acid sequestrants

What is Cholestyramine?

Cholestyramine can be used to reduce high cholesterol levels in the blood. This is especially true for low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol. Cholestyramine can also be used to treat itching due to a blockage of the bile ducts in the gallbladder. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of cholestyramine.

Side effects of Cholestyramine

If you experience symptoms indicative of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swelling to lips, face, tongue or throat - seek medical help immediately!

Cholestyramine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Constipation that is persistent or getting worse
  • Severe stomach pain;
  • Blood in urine
  • Black, bloody, or tarry stool;
  • Easy bruising and unusual bleeding

Older adults may experience more side effects, such as constipation.

Some of the common side effects associated with cholestyramine include:

  • Mild diarrhea
  • Stomach pain, nausea, and loss of appetite
  • Bloating or gas
  • Itching of the tongue
  • Itching or irritation in the area of your genital region

Warnings

If you have a blockage in your stomach or intestines, do not use cholestyramine.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to cholestyramine or another component, take appropriate action immediately.

  • A blockage of your biliary system.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Chronic constipation
  • A thyroid disorder
  • Diabetes;
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Coronary artery disease

This medicine contains phenylalanine. If you have phenylketonuria, talk to your doctor about using cholestyramine. Cholesteryramine may make it more difficult for your body to absorb certain vitamins. You may be recommended to take a vitamin supplement by your doctor. Inform your physician immediately if you become pregnant or nursing, even if only temporarily. Vitamin supplements may be more important during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Be sure to follow your doctor's advice about taking vitamin supplements when you are being treated with cholestyramine.

How to take Cholestyramine?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow the directions. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. Take your medication exactly as prescribed. Cholesteryramine can be taken as many as six times per day. Follow your doctor's instructions for dosage.

Mix the powdered cholestyramine with 2 to 6 ounces (or other non-carbonated beverages) of water. Mix the powder with brothy soups, crushed pineapple, or applesauce. Use the scoop that came with your medication to measure the powder. Use only the scoop provided with your medication to measure your dose. To get the best results, use cholestyramine frequently. Refill your prescription before you run out. Cholestyramine may cause damage to the surface of your teeth. Sipping the cholestyramine/liquid mixture slowly or holding the liquid in your mouth for too long may result in tooth discoloration, enamel erosion, or tooth decay. Brush your teeth regularly when using this medication.

Take extra fluids while taking cholestyramine to avoid constipation. You may need to have frequent blood tests while using cholestyramine. Cholestyramine may be part of a comprehensive treatment programme that includes diet, exercise, and weight management. Be sure to follow your diet, medications, and exercise regimens closely. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Constipation or severe abdominal pain can be symptoms of an overdose.

What should be avoided?

Do not take other medications while taking cholestyramine. You should wait at least one hour or four to six hours after you have taken cholestyramine before taking any other medication.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking. Many drugs can cause cholestyramine to be affected, including:

  • Hormonal replacement therapy or birth control pills
  • Digoxin (digitalis);
  • A diuretic, or "water pill".
  • Penicillin G
  • Phenobarbital;
  • Phenylbutazone;
  • Propranolol
  • Spironolactone;
  • Tetracycline;
  • Thyroid medication such as levothyroxine
  • Warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven).
