Cefpodoxime

What is Cefpodoxime?

Cefpodoxime, a cephalosporin (SEF is a low-sporin) antibacterial, is used to treat bacteria-caused infections. This includes infections in the sinuses, throat, ear, and skin. Cefpodoxime can also be used to treat gonorrhoea. Cefpodoxime can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Cefpodoxime

If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling and skin inflammation or another serious reaction - such as itchy patches - this could indicate that something has caused it.(fever or sore throat, pain in the eyes, or skin irritation), or if your skin has rashes that are red or purple and cause blisters or peeling, seek emergency medical attention.

Cefpodoxime may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe stomach pain; bloody or watery diarrhoea (even months after the last dose);
  • If you have a fever, chills, or a sore throat, if your glands are swollen, or if you feel unwell, then joint pain is likely to be the cause.
  • A seizure;
  • Liver problems: upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, and clay-coloured stools. Jaundice.

Some of the common side effects associated with cefpodoxime include:

  • Diarrhoea;
  • Nausea, stomach pain;
  • Headache;
  • Vaginal itching, or discharge
  • Diaper rash on an infant treated with cefpodoxime

Warnings

Cefpodoxime should not be used if you've ever experienced a severe reaction to a cephalosporin (Omniclef, Keflex, and others).

Before you take this drug

Cefpodoxime should not be taken if you have an allergy to it or any cephalosporin (cefdinir, Keflex, Omnicef, and others).

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Kidney disease
  • Urination problems
  • A stomach or intestinal disorder, such as colitis
  • A penicillin allergy is an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor that you are expecting. Cefpodoxime should not be used while breastfeeding. Cefpodoxime should not be used by children younger than 2 months.

How to take Cefpodoxime?

Do not ignore or bypass any instructions included with your medication and follow their directions exactly. Follow the directions on the label. Cefpodoxime tablets can be taken with food. Cefpodoxime liquid suspension can be taken with or without food. Before measuring a dose, shake the liquid. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon).

Be patient even if your symptoms improve quickly - continue taking this medication until the full prescribed duration has elapsed.You can get infections that are resistant to medications if you skip doses. Cefpodoxime does not treat viral infections, such as the flu or common cold. Cefpodoxime can interfere with certain medical tests. Tell your doctor that you use cefpodoxime.

Keep the tablets away from moisture, heat, and other sources of heat. Keep the liquid tightly closed in the fridge. Don't freeze. After 14 days, throw away any liquid that has not been used.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of a medicine at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.

What should be avoided?

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. This could be an indication of a new illness. Call your doctor if you have bloody or watery diarrhoea before taking anti-diarrhoea medication.

Interaction with other drug

Cefpodoxime may harm your kidneys if you are also taking certain medications for cancer, infection, osteoporosis, or organ rejection. It can also be harmful if you have bowel disorders or high blood pressure.

Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:

  • Probenecid;
  • An antacid;
  • Reduces stomach acid (Pepcid, Tagamet, and others).
