What is Cefixime?
Cefixime can be used as an antibiotic to treat a wide range of infections that are caused by bacteria.Cefixime prevents bacteria from building the cell wall they need to survive. It reduces the amount of bacteria in the body and helps the body fight infections.Cefixime FDA approval was granted in 1989.

Before you take this drug
This medicine should not be taken if you have an allergy to cefixime or other cephalosporin antibacterials, such as

Tell your doctor if you have an allergy to any drug, particularly penicillins, if cefixime will be safe for you.Cefixime chewable tablets may contain phenylalanine.If you suffer from phenylketonuria, discuss using this form with your physician.Cefixime is not known to harm unborn babies. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.
Cefixime is not known to pass into breast milk or to harm a baby who is nursing. You should tell your doctor if breastfeeding is a possibility. It is possible that you will need to stop breastfeeding while taking cefixime.The liquid cefixime suspension contains sucrose. If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor about using this cefixime suspension.

How to take Cefixime?
Cefixime labels contain detailed instructions. Cefixime should not be taken in higher or lower doses or for longer than prescribed.Cefixime may be taken either with or without food.Cefixime must be chewed first before swallowing.Just before measuring a dose, shake the liquid oral cefixime suspension well. Use the provided dosing syringe or a dose-measuring cup or spoon to measure liquid medicine. Consult your pharmacist if you don't already own an appropriate device to measure doses.
Cefixime can produce unusual results in certain lab tests that measure glucose (sugar). Inform any doctor that you see about your medication.Cefixime should be taken for the entire prescribed duration.Before your infection has completely cleared away, symptoms may arise that indicate it. You may increase your chances of a second infection resistant to antibiotics if you skip doses. Cefixime does not treat viral infections, such as the cold and flu.
Cefixime should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.Store cefixime orally liquid in your refrigerator. After 14 days, throw away any liquid that has not been used.
What happens if I miss the dose?
Cefixime should be taken as soon as possible after you forget. If your next scheduled dosage is quickly approaching, skip any missed ones and move directly on. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What should be avoided?
Antibiotics can cause diarrhoea. This could be an indication of a new illness. Call your doctor if you experience diarrhoea that is bloody or watery. You should only take anti-diarrhoea medication if your doctor has prescribed it.
Side effects of Cefixime
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy to cefixime, seek immediate medical attention: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of your lips, face, or throat.
Cefixime can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Diarrhoea that is bloody or watery; severe stomach pain
- Jaundice
- Dark urine or pale skin; confusion or weakness.
- A seizure (convulsions);
- Low blood cell counts can cause sudden weakness or flu-like symptoms. They may also include swollen lips, sores on the skin, sores in the mouth, and a rapid heartbeat. Other symptoms are pale skin, easy bleeding, or feeling light-headed.
- Kidney problems: difficulty or no urinating at all, painful urination, feet/ankle swelling and feeling fatigued/short of breath are some indicators.
- Severe skin reaction: fever, sore mouth, swelling of the face, tongue, or eyes, burning of your eyes A red or purple rash appears, which spreads to your face and upper body, causing blisters and peeling.
Some of the common side effects associated with cefixime include:
- Indigestion, stomach pain;
- Nausea, vomiting,
- Vaginal itching and discharge

Interaction with other drug
Cefixime may interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform all healthcare providers of any medications you are currently taking or intend to take.
