What is Zonalon?

Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant. If applied to the face, Zonalon can ease itching, but it cannot help with symptoms of depression.

Zonalon (for use on the skin) is a treatment for itchy skin in adults suffering from the condition of eczema and other skin problems that may cause the skin to become thicker and scratched repeatedly.Zonalon can also be used to treat conditions that are not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Zonalon

Contact a medical professional immediately. Get medical attention immediately if you notice symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your lips, face, or tongue.

Although the risk of causing serious negative side effects is very low when Zonalon is applied to the skin, negative reactions can happen if the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. You might feel tired when you apply this treatment, particularly if you've treated a large area of the skin.

Zonalon may cause serious side effects. Stop taking Zonalon and contact your doctor immediately if you suffer from:

  • Extreme sleepiness;
  • Confusion;
  • Extreme, severe dry mouth;
  • Urination that is painful or difficult
  • Blurred vision
  • Skin conditions that are becoming more severe or new

Certain side effects are more common in older adults.

Common negative side effects of Zonalon could include:

  • There was a burning or stinging sensation when the medication was applied.
  • Mild drowsiness;
  • Dry mouth.

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to use Zonalon if you have an allergy to the chemical doxepin (Silenor, Sinequan) or if you suffer from:

  • Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma that is not treated;
  • Urinary problems.

Before taking Zonalon, inform your physician about any medical issues or allergies.There is no way to determine if the medication can impact a newborn infant. Consult your physician if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Doxepin can be found in breast milk and can cause side effects for the nursing infant. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding.Zonalon is not a product that is approved to be used by anyone younger than 18 years old.

What should I do with Zonalon?

Follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Don't use this medication in smaller or larger quantities or for longer than the recommended time.Do not chew it. Topical medicines are intended for use solely on the skin. Don't apply this medication to wounds that are open or to sunburned, windburned, or chapped skin. If this medication gets into your nose, eyes, mouth, rectum, or vagina, wash it off with water.

Zonalon is typically applied four times per day. Give at least 3 hours between treatments.Spread a light layer of cream on the affected skin and massage gently.Do not cover the affected skin area with a wrap or other type of cover. The use of bandages can boost the quantity of medication absorption through your skin and have negative consequences.

Do not take this medicine for more than 8 consecutive days. Stop using the medicine and consult your physician if your symptoms do not improve.Keep the tube at room temperature, free of heat and moisture. Close the tube when not in use.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose when you remember. Do not take your missed dose if you are nearing the time for the next dose.Do not take any additional medicine to make up for the missing dosage.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdose-related symptoms may be serious when too much Zonalon is absorbed by the skin. Overdose symptoms can include extreme dizziness, drowsiness, feeling cold or hot, chilled, vomiting, confusion, agitation, difficulties staying focused, irregular heartbeats, visions, fainting, muscle stiffness, dilated pupils, or seizures (convulsions).

Avoid this

Rinse your eyes with water if the medicine is absorbed into your eyes.

Incorporating large amounts of this medication through your skin can cause adverse reactions that may cause a decline in your ability to think or react. Be cautious when driving or engaging in any activity that requires you to stay vigilant.Alcohol consumption with this medicine could cause adverse consequences.

Interaction with other drugs

When you take Zonalon along with other medicines that cause you to sleep, this could increase the severity of this effect. Consult your physician before taking a narcotic, sleeping pill, drug, muscle relaxer, or medication to treat anxiety, depression, or seizures.

Before taking Zonalon, inform your doctor if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days, like linezolid and isocarboxazid, as well as the methylene blue injections of selegiline, rasagiline, tranylcypromine, and many others.

Discuss with your physician your current medications and any new medications you begin or stop using, in particular:

  • Cimetidine;
  • Heart rhythm medications
  • Any antidepressant medicine you consume by mouth.
