What is Ziluton?

Zileuton can be used to help prevent asthma attacks as well as for long-term treatment of asthma in adults and children who are at least 12 years old.

Zileuton can also be used for reasons not mentioned in this guideline.

Side effects of Zileuton

See a doctor immediately. Get medical attention immediately if you notice symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction, like hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of your lips, tongue, throat, or face.

Zileuton could cause severe adverse reactions. Consult your physician right away. If you suffer from:

  • The symptoms of asthma are getting worse.
  • Insomnia;
  • Changes in sleep issues or changes in behavior change in behavior, sleep issues or
  • Liver issues, nausea nausea, gastric symptoms such as stomach pain (upper right side), fatigue, itching, black stools, dark urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin).

Common adverse effects of zileuton could include:

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to consume zileuton if you are allergic to it or if you suffer from:

  • The liver condition
  • Extremely high liver enzymes in an analysis of blood.

Inform your doctor if you were ever diagnosed with:

  • Liver disorders, liver problems, dark urine, jaundice (yellow eyes or skin),
  • If you consume a lot of alcohol.

Consult your physician if you are nursing or pregnant.

If you're expecting, you could be included on the pregnancy registry to monitor the effects of Ziuton on your baby.

How to take Zileuton?

Follow the instructions on the prescription label and go through all medication guides or instruction sheets. Make sure you use the medicine precisely as directed.Zileuton tablets are typically consumed four times a day at the same time throughout the day, whether or not food is included. If you are unable to swallow tablets whole, cut the tablet in half and consume only one portion at a time.

Zileuton extended-release tablets are generally taken twice a day, within one hour following your meals in the morning and at night.Suck your extended-release tablets in their entirety, but do not crush, chew, or break them.The symptoms might not get better for several days or a couple of weeks. Continue to take Ziton even if there are no symptoms (an indication that the medication is effective).

Zileuton cannot be considered a quick-acting emergency medication during an asthma attack. Seek medical attention when your breathing issues become rapidly worse or you believe the medications you are taking aren't functioning.

Do not alter your dosage or stop taking asthma medications without a doctor's recommendation.You'll need regular blood tests to monitor your liver's functioning.Maintain at room temperature and away from heat, humidity, and light.

Usual Adult Dose for Asthma—Maintenance:

Immediate Release:
600 mg orally taken four times per day
Maximum daily dose: 2400 mg
Extended Release:
-1200 mg, taken orally twice a day, for one hour following the morning and evening meals.
Maximum daily dose: 2400 mg
Comments:
Tablets for immediate release can be taken during meals or before bedtime.
Examine the enzymes of hepatic function prior to starting the medication and then periodically throughout the treatment.
Use: prophylaxis and long-term treatment for asthma

Usual Pediatric Dose for Asthma—Maintenance:

Children younger than 12 years old are not recommended.
Age 12 or over:
Instant Release: 600 mg, orally, four times per day.
Extended release: 1200 mg taken orally daily, at least one hour following breakfast and dinner.
Maximum daily dose: 2400 mg
Comments:
Tablets for immediate release can be taken during meals or at night.
Examine the enzymes of hepatic function prior to starting this medication and then periodically throughout the treatment.
Use: prophylaxis as well as chronic treatment for asthma

What happens if I miss a dose?

Do not miss the missed dose, and take the next dose at a regular time. Do not take more than two doses at the same time.

Avoid this

Beware of drinking alcohol. It can increase the chance of sustaining damage to your liver.

Interaction with other drugs

If you stop or begin using Zijuton, you may need to adjust the dosages of other medicines you take regularly, including:

  • Propranolol;
  • Theophylline
  • Warfarin, Coumadin, and Jantoven
