What is Xadago?

Xadago has been identified as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor kind B (MAO-B). It works by allowing dopamine (DOE pa meen) to function for longer periods within the brain. Dopamine levels that are low in the brain can be associated with Parkinson's disease.

Xadago is prescribed together with carbidopa and levodopa in order to manage "wearing-off" episodes (muscle stiffness or loss of control of muscles) for people suffering from Parkinson's disease.

Warnings

It is best not to take Xadago in the case of an extremely severe liver disease.Tell your doctor about all the other medications you use. Certain medicines may cause undesirable or harmful adverse effects (including death) when taken within 14 days from the time you start taking Xadago.

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to use the Xadago drug if you have an allergy to safinamide or if you are:

  • A severe liver disease.

Certain medicines may cause undesirable or harmful consequences (including deaths) when combined with Xadago. It is not recommended to use any of these medicines for 14 days prior to or 14 days after taking Xadago.

  • Amphetamines (Adderall, Dexedrine, and other amphetamines);
  • Cough medicine that has dextromethorphan
  • Cyclobenzaprine;
  • Methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin, Daytrana, and more);
  • John's wort;
  • Another MAO inhibitor is isocarboxazid, linezolid, Methylene Blue injection, rasagiline, and phenelzine, as well as tranylcypromine.
  • Certain antidepressants like amitriptyline (Elavil), desipramine (Norpramin), desvenlafaxine (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), levomilnacipran (Fetzima), maprotiline (Ludiomil), milnacipran (Savella), trimipramine (Surmontil), venlafaxine (Effexor), the drug vilazodone (Viibryd), and many more
  • Opioid (narcotic) medication such as meperidine (Demerol), propoxyphene, methadone (Darvon), tramadol (Ultram, Ultracet), and many more.

To be sure Xadago is suitable for you, ask your doctor if you have ever experienced:

  • Liver disease;
  • Blood pressure, either low or high;
  • Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or psychosis;
  • Extraordinary urges or impulses
  • Abnormal muscle movements;
  • Problems with the retina of your eye;
  • Narcolepsy or another sleep disorder (or taking medication to aid in your sleep).

It is unclear if the Xadago drug will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are expecting or planning to be pregnant.

It isn't known if safinamide can be found in breast milk or the risk to the nursing infant. It is not advised to feed your baby while you take this medicine.

How to take Xadago?

Use Xadago according to the prescription given by your physician. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor might alter your dosage. Avoid using this medicine in greater or lesser quantities or for longer periods than the recommended time.

Safinamide should be administered in conjunction with levodopa and carbidopa and should not be taken in isolation.Xadago is generally taken once every day at the same moment.It is possible to take this medication either with or without meals..The blood pressure of your patients should be regularly monitored.Keep at room temperature, free of heat and moisture.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Parkinson's Disease:

The first dose is 50 mg, taken orally every day.
Maintenance dose: After two weeks, you may increase the dose up to 100 mg orally every day, based on individual needs and tolerability.
Maximum dose: 100 mg per day.
Comment:
Higher doses haven't been proven to offer benefits; however, they can increase the risk of having adverse reactions.
The drug has only been proven effective when used with levodopa or carbidopa.
Use: As a complement for patients suffering from levodopa or carbabidopa PD who are experiencing "off" episodes.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Do the dose you missed as quickly as you can remember.Avoid taking missed doses, especially if you are nearing the date for your next dose. Do not take any additional medicine to make up for the missed dose.

What should be avoided?

When using Xadago and for the 14 days following its discontinuation, you should avoid eating food items that contain tyramine. These include pickled foods (such as eggs or herring) and meats that have been aged and cured, smoked, or fermented.

Consuming tyramine when you are taking safinamide could increase your blood pressure to dangerous levels, which can cause serious side effects. It is recommended that you become aware of what foods you should not eat while you're taking Xadago.A few people who are taking this medication have experienced sleepiness during normal daily activities like driving, working, or any other physical activity. Do not drive or operate machinery until you are aware of the effects this medication will have on your health.

Side effects of Xadago

Take immediate medical attention if you exhibit symptoms indicating that you are experiencing an allergic reaction. Xadago: hives; difficulty breathing; and swelling of your lips, face, and tongue.

See your doctor right away if you're experiencing:

  • Vision change;
  • Muscle movements that are uncontrolled or twitching;
  • Anxiety, confusion, strange thoughts or behaviors;
  • Hallucinations (seeing and hearing sounds that aren't real);
  • A seizure;
  • Sweating, fever, high heart rate, hyperactive reflexes;
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • Raised blood pressure a severe headache poor vision, pounding inside your neck or ear, and anxiety. You may also experience nosebleeds, headaches, or anxiety.

There is a possibility that you will experience increased sexual cravings, unusual urges towards gambling, or other extreme cravings when you are taking this medication. Consult your physician when this happens.

Common side effects of Xadago include:

  • Involuntary muscle movements
  • Falls;
  • Nausea;
  • Sleep problems (insomnia).

Interaction with other drugs
