What is Vistogard?
Vistogard slows down the cell damage caused by cancer drugs (capecitabine and fluorouracil).Vistogard treats an overdose of capecitabine and fluorouracil.Vistogard can also be used to treat severe side effects of capecitabine and fluorouracil in an emergency. This includes side effects on the stomach, intestines, or blood cells, as well as the nervous system, heart, and heart muscle.
This medicine can be administered before symptoms of overdose appear. Vistogard treatment must be started within 96 hours of your last capecitabine or fluorouracil dose.
Warnings
This guide contains information on the Vistogard brand of uridine triacetate. This medication guide does not cover Xuriden, another brand of uridine.
Please read all the instructions on the label or package of your medication. Inform your healthcare provider about your medical conditions, your allergies, and the medicines you are using.
Before you take this drug
Tell your doctor all of your medical conditions, allergies, and medicines that you take before you start using Vistogard. Vistogard may not work for you in some cases. You may also need to adjust the dose or take special precautions.
Vistogard is not known to harm unborn babies.Notify your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.It is unknown if uridine triacetate can pass into breast milk or if it will harm a baby who is nursing. Inform your doctor if your baby is breastfed.
How To Take a Vistogard?
Follow the directions on your prescription label to take Vistogard. Please follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Take this medication only as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or take it for too long.Vistogard should be taken four times a day, every six hours. The full treatment will require 20 doses. All doses should be completed in 5 days.
Vistogard is available in the form of oral granules, which must be mixed into soft food prior to consumption. The granules should not be eaten by themselves.You should read all the information provided, including medication guides and instructions. If you have questions, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.One packet (10 grammes of oral granules) is one adult dose. The child's dose will be smaller than the adult dose and is determined by the child's height and weight.
You will need less than one full packet of oral granules for a child. Be sure to measure the dose of Vistogard for your child carefully.Do not save the Vistogard packet after measuring out the dose for the child. You should not keep it for future use.Adults and children can mix the dose measured with 3 to 4 ounces of soft foods such as pudding, applesauce, or yogurt. The mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing. Don't save the mixture for later.
Drink at least four ounces of liquid after taking the Vistogard dosage.Measure, mix, and swallow a full dose if you vomit after 2 hours. Take the next dose as usual.Vistogard can be administered through a nasogastric tube (NG) if necessary. Follow your doctor's instructions when measuring and mixing oral granules for use through a feeding tube.
Even if you are feeling well, use Vistogard as prescribed. You must finish all 20 Vistogard doses in order to complete the treatment.Keep unopened packets away from moisture, heat, and humidity.This medicine comes in single-use packs. Each one is only for one-time use. Even if the medicine is still inside, throw away the single-use packet once you have measured your dose.
Details on dosage
Usual Adult Dose of Vistogard for Fluorouracil/Capecitabine Overdose:
Take 10 grammes (1 packet), orally, every 6 hours.
Comment: Mix each dose with 3–4 ounces of soft food, such as pudding, applesauce, or yogurt, and consume within 30 minutes, along with 4 ounces of water.
Use: For the treatment of an overdose of capecitabine or fluorouracil, regardless of whether symptoms are present, or in patients with severe or life-threatening toxic effects on the central nervous system or cardiac system and/or severe early-onset adverse reactions (e.g., gastrointestinal toxicity or neutropenia), within 96 hours of the last administration of capecitabine or fluorouracil.
Adult dose of Vistogard:
Initial Dose: 60 mg/kg once daily orally
Maintenance Dose: Increase the dosage to 120 mg/kg orally, once per day, if there is insufficient efficacy. For example:
-the levels of orotic acids in urine are above normal, or they increase beyond the range that is expected or usual for the patient.
Laboratory values (e.g., red blood cell or white blood cell indices) that are affected by hereditary aciduria have a tendency to worsen;
increase in other symptoms or signs of the disease.
Maximum Dose: 8 grams taken orally, once per day.
Comment: If a patient requires doses that are multiples of two grams (or three-quarters teaspoon), the entire packet may be given without measuring or weighing.
Use: Treatment for hereditary orotic aciduria
Usual Paediatric Dose for Fluorouracil/Capecitabine Overdose:
Orally, take 6.2 grams/m2 BSA every 6 hours.
Maximum Dose: 10 grammes per dose
Comments:
Measure the dose with a scale that is accurate to 0.1 grams or a graduated spoon accurate to 1/4 teaspoon.
Each dose should be taken within 30 minutes with 4 ounces of water and 3 to 4 ounces of soft food such as pudding, applesauce, or yogurt.
The granules that are not being used should be thrown away and will not be used for dosing.
Limited clinical data indicate that response and safety are similar between pediatric and adult patients.
Use: For the treatment of an overdose of capecitabine or fluorouracil, regardless of whether symptoms are present, or in patients with severe or life-threatening toxic effects on the central nervous system or cardiac system and/or severe early-onset adverse reactions (e.g., gastrointestinal toxicity or neutropenia), within 96 hours of the last administration of capecitabine or fluorouracil.
Common Paediatric Dose of Orotic aciduria: Initial Dose: 60 mg/kg once daily
Maintenance Dose: Increase the dosage to 120 mg/kg orally, once per day, if there is insufficient efficacy. For example:
Orotic acid levels in urine are above normal ranges or exceed the expected or usual ranges for the patient.
Laboratory values (e.g., red blood cell or white blood cell indices) that are affected by hereditary aciduria have a tendency to worsen;
-aggravation of other symptoms or signs of the disease
Maximum Dose: 8 grams taken orally, once per day.
Comments:
This drug can be administered to patients who receive up to 2 grams (about 3/4 teaspoon) of the product. Consult the manufacturer's information for instructions on how it should be administered.
For patients who require doses that are multiples of two grams (or three-quarters teaspoon), the entire packet or packages may be administered without any weighing or measurement.
Treatment of hereditary aciduria
What happens if I miss the dose?
As soon as you recall, take the missed dose. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching, skip the missed dose. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.A vistogard overdose is unlikely to cause life-threatening symptoms.
What should be avoided?
If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.
Side effects of Vistogard
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives or itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, please seek emergency medical attention.
Vistogard may cause side effects such as:
- Nausea;
- Vomiting;

Interaction with other drug
