Drug class: topical antipsoriatics

Generic name: Cal-sihpohtry-een.

What is Sorilux?

Sorilux Foam is a synthetic form of vitamin D that helps to grow and develop skin cells. Sorilux Foam can be used to treat plaque-psoriasis, or psoriasis that has scaly patches. Sorilux can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Warnings

Sorilux should not be used if you're allergic to calcipotriene or have high calcium levels in your blood. Tell your doctor before using Sorilux if you receive phototherapy for psoriasis.

Avoid getting the medication in your mouth, eyes, or vagina. Rinse with water if this happens. Sorilux should not be used to treat skin conditions that have not been examined by your doctor. This medication should never be shared with another individual, even if their symptoms match up exactly with those of this treatment.

Before you take this drug

Sorilux foam should not be used if the user is allergic to it or has high calcium levels in their blood (hypercalcemia). Tell your doctor that you received phototherapy for your psoriasis.

Sorilux can cause pregnancy. Tell your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant. It is unknown if calcipotriene can pass into breast milk or if it would harm a baby who was nursing. You should not take this medication if you are breastfeeding a child without first consulting your doctor. If you are breastfeeding, do not apply the medicine to your chest. Sorilux should not be used on children without consulting a doctor.

How to take Sorilux?

Sorilux foam should be applied twice a day to the affected area and rubbed in completely. Your doctor has advised that this medication must be taken according to his/her directions. Please follow the instructions on your prescription label. Sorilux should not be used to treat skin conditions that have not been examined by a doctor. This medication should never be shared with another individual, even if they suffer similar symptoms.

The patient instructions accompany this medication and ensure that it is used safely and effectively. Please follow the directions. If you have questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Sorilux should be applied to clean hands. Sorilux should only be applied to the affected area. Only apply the medication to the affected areas. Shake foam (Sorilux) well, just before measuring a dose.

Your symptoms may improve in as little as 2 weeks. Keep taking the medication according to its directions, and notify your physician if there is no improvement after eight weeks. Sorilux should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep Sorilux out of the refrigerator and freezer. Sorilux foam is flammable. Smoking is not recommended until the medicine on your skin has dried completely. Avoid exposing the canister to open flames or high temperatures, like in a hot car. If the canister gets too warm, it may explode. You should not burn or puncture an empty inhaler.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as you recall, apply the missed dose. If it's almost time to take your next dose, you can skip the missed dose and only apply your regular dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Some of the symptoms listed in this guide may be severe overdose symptoms.

What should be avoided?

Avoid getting Sorilux foam on your face, eyes, mouth, or vagina. Rinse with water if this happens. Use the foam only on skin that is not sunburned or windburned. It should also not be used on dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin. This medicine may make you more susceptible to sunburn. Avoid tanning beds or sunlight. When you're outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen (SPF 30) or higher.

Do not use other medications to treat the same areas that you have treated with Sorilux, unless you are told by your doctor.

Side effects of Sorilux

Sorilux can cause severe allergic reactions. If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, throat, or tongue.

Sorilux should be stopped immediately if you experience a severe side effect, such as:

  • After using this medication, you may experience severe burning, stinging, or irritation.
  • Skin conditions are worsening;
  • High calcium levels cause confusion, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, and increased thirst or urination.

Less serious Sorilux side effects may include:

  • Mild skin redness;
  • Dry or peeling skin
  • Mild rash or itching

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor if you take any other medications, including:

  • Calcium or vitamin D-containing supplements or vitamins.

Sorilux may interact with other drugs not listed here. Inform your doctor of all the medications you take. Included are prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, vitamin, and vitamin products. Never start a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
