What is Solosec?

Solosec is a powerful antimicrobial agent. Solosec is an antibacterial medicine prescribed to women for the treatment of vaginal bacterial infections.

Solosec can also be used to treat trichomoniasis in adults, a sexually transmitted disease (STI). Sexual partners should both be treated simultaneously. To prevent reinfection, people should not have sex with their partners until both of them are treated. Secnidazole does not treat yeast infections.

Warnings

While using Solosec, you should not breastfeed for at least four days after the last dose.

Before you take this drug

Solosec should not be used if you have an allergy to secnidazole and similar medicines, such as benznidazole, metronidazole, Flagyl, or Tindamax. This medicine is not known to harm an unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.

While taking this medication and for at least four days after the last dose, you should not breastfeed. Solosec is not recommended for anyone under the age of 12.

How to take Solosec?

Follow the instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Read all the instructions and directions that come with your prescription. Follow the directions on the label. One packet of Solosec oral granules is sufficient for a single dosage. This medicine can be taken with or without food.

Use the oral granules by opening the packet, and sprinkle the powder on a spoonful of yogurt, applesauce, or pudding. The mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing. Don't save the mixture for later.

After swallowing the oral mixture, drink a glass of water. The oral granules should not be dissolved in any liquid. Keep the packets at room temperature until you're ready to use the medicine. Protect the packet from heat and moisture.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for bacterial vaginosis:

Orally, take 2 g once.
Use: To treat bacterial vaginosis among female patients

Adult dose for trichomoniasis:

Orally, take 2 g once.
Comments:
Sexual partners of patients with trichomoniasis should also be treated at the same dosage to prevent reinfection. This is because trichomoniasis can have serious consequences.
Use: To treat trichomoniasis caused by Trichomonas vulgaris

The usual pediatric dose for bacterial vaginosis is:

Do not exceed 12 years of age. 2 g, once orally
Use: To treat bacterial vaginosis among female patients

Comments:

What happens if I miss the dose?

Solosec does not require a daily schedule of dosage because it is only used in a single dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Solosec can be taken in excess, but it is rare.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Side effects of Solosec

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: itching; difficulty breathing; swelling in your face, lips, or throat; or hives, seek emergency medical attention.

While taking this medication, you may develop a vaginal yeast infection. You should call your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Vaginal itching and burning
  • Redness or swelling is a sign of inflammation.
  • White or yellow vaginal discharge may be odorless.

Side effects of Solosec include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and  stomach pain;
  • Headache
  • A metallic or bitter taste in the mouth.

Interaction with other drug

Secnidazole may also interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
