What is Simethicone?

Simethicone relieves painful pressure in the stomach or intestines caused by excessive gas. Simethicone can be used by babies, children, and adults. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for simethicone.

Side effects of Simethicone

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, or throat. You may experience less serious side effects or none at all.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to simethicone, then it is best not to use this product. If you are allergic or have a serious illness, such as one affecting your stomach or intestines, ask a doctor if simethicone is safe to use.

Before taking this medication if you are pregnant or nursing, consult with your healthcare provider first. If you have phenylketonuria (PKU), talk to your doctor before using this form of simethicone. If you suffer from phenylketonuria, talk to your physician about using this form.

How to take Simethicone?

Follow the directions provided on the label or prescribed by your physician. Take only the prescribed dose of this medication. It is best to take Simethicone after eating and before bedtime. Before swallowing, a chewable tablet must first be chewed thoroughly. Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon) to measure liquid medicine.

You can mix Simethicone liquid droplets with water, formula, or other liquids in order to make it easier for a child or infant to swallow. Follow the directions on the label of the medication when giving simethicone to a child. Contact your doctor if gas symptoms in the child do not improve.

Simethicone may require you to increase your physical activity or follow a special dietary regimen. You should follow the instructions given by your doctor or dietitian. Learn which foods you should eat and avoid in order to control your condition. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Liquid medicines must not be allowed to freeze.

What happens if I miss the dose?

You may not have a schedule for simethicone because it is only used as needed. If your next dose is near, skip any missed doses. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Ask your doctor about antacids, and only use the ones that your doctor has prescribed. Some antacids may contain simethicone.

Interaction with other drug

Simethicone can be affected by other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
