
What is Robitussin Cold Cough and Flu?
Acetaminophen is used to reduce fever and relieve pain. Dextromethorphan works as a cough suppressant. It works by affecting the brain signals that trigger the cough reflex. Guaifenesin acts as an expectorant. It loosens congestion in the chest and throat, making it easier for you to cough through your mouth. Pseudoephedrine works as a nasal decongestant by shrinking blood vessels. Nasal congestion can be caused by dilated blood vessels. Robitussin Cough, Cold, and Flu is an anti-allergy combination medicine that treats headaches and other symptoms such as body aches, congestion in the chest, nasal congestion, and stuffy noses caused by allergies. It can also be used to treat the common cold or flu.
Robitussin for colds and flu is not effective in treating a cough caused by smoking or asthma. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Robitussin for colds and flu.
Side Effects of Robitussin Cold Cough and Flu
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat. Acetaminophen can cause severe skin reactions that are fatal. This may happen even if you've taken it before and never had a reaction. Call your doctor immediately if the skin becomes red or you develop a rash. If blisters form and you peel them off, stop taking this medication.
This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Chest pain;
- Heart rate can be fast, slow, or uneven.
- Feeling dizzy to the point where it seems you may pass out;
- Mood changes, confusion, hallucinations, tremor, seizure (convulsions);
- Fever;
- Little or no urinating is acceptable.
- Nausea; pain in the upper stomach; itching; loss of appetite; and dark urine or clay-colored stools. Jaundice.
- Symptoms of dangerously high blood pressure include severe headaches, blurred visions, buzzing in the ears, anxiety, chest pains, irregular heartbeats, and seizures.
Some of the common side effects associated with Robitussin Cold Cough and Flu include:
- Dizziness, weakness;
- Mild headache
- Mild nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach;
- Dry mouth, nose, or throat
- Feeling nervous, restless, or irritable;
- Sleep problems (insomnia).

Warnings
Don't take more than recommended. An acetaminophen overdose can cause liver damage or death. Acetaminophen can cause severe skin reactions in rare cases. Should you experience skin reddening, blisters or any kind of abnormal skin condition it is imperative that you contact a healthcare provider immediately. Many combination medicines contain acetaminophen. Taking certain medicines together can result in an overdose of acetaminophen.
Before you take this drug
This medication should not be used if you have an allergy to acetaminophen or any of the following: dextromethorphan (dextromethorphan), guaifenesin (guaifenesin), or pseudoephedrine.
MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid (Linezolid), phenelzine (Rasagiline), selegiline (Tranylcypromine) and rasagiline. A potentially lethal interaction may arise.
If you have any other medical conditions or concerns, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether it's safe to take the medicine.
- Alcoholism or if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks per day.
- Heart disease or coronary heart disease.
- Diabetes;
- Glaucoma;
- Epilepsy
- Urination or prostate problems;
- If you have a cough that is mucus-related or is caused by chronic lung disease, then it's a cough with mucus.
- Pheochromocytoma
- Overactive thyroid.
Robitussin for colds, coughs, and flu is not known to harm an unborn child. If you are pregnant, do not take this medication without consulting your doctor. This medication can pass into breastmilk and harm a nursing infant. Decongestants can also reduce breast milk production.If you are breastfeeding an infant, do not take this medication without first consulting with your healthcare provider. Phenylalanine can be found in artificially sweetened liquid medicines. If you suffer from phenylketonuria, be sure to read your medication label thoroughly.
How to take Robitussin Colds Cough and Flu?
Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration. Use only the recommended dose. Do not exceed it. This medication should only be taken for a limited period of time until your symptoms have subsided. Don't take more than recommended. Acetaminophen overdoses can cause liver damage or death. This medication should not be given to children younger than four years of age. Ask a doctor first before giving cough and cold medicine to children. Children as young as 4 years old can die from the misuse of cough and cold medicines. One packet of powder should be dissolved in 4 ounces or more of water. Mix this mixture well and consume it immediately. Take the medicine for no more than seven days. If you continue to have a high fever or pain even after three days, call your doctor. Tell your doctor or surgeon immediately if you have taken medication in the last several days that may need testing or surgery, especially if necessary for diagnosis or surgical procedure. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature for optimal storage conditions. Liquid medicines should not be allowed to freeze.
What happens if I miss the dose?
You may not have a schedule for taking Robitussin for colds, coughs, and flu. Take the missed dose immediately if you take the medication regularly. If your next scheduled dosage is near, skip the missed dose. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. Acetaminophen overdoses can be deadly. Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, sweating, and confusion or weakness are the first signs. Other symptoms include dark urine and yellowing skin or whites of the eyes.
What should be avoided?
Before using any other pain reliever, allergy medicine, or sleep medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Many combination medications contain acetaminophen, also known as APAP. Taking some products together may cause an overdose of acetaminophen, which could be fatal. Avoid alcohol. You may be at greater risk for liver damage if you take acetaminophen. This medication can affect your ability to think or react. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires you to remain alert.
Interaction with other drug
Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies, may interact with Robitussin for colds and flu. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines you are taking and those you plan to take.
