What is Nature-Throid?

The desireccated (dried) thyroid can be described as a mixture of hormones that are normally made by the thyroid gland to regulate your metabolism and the energy of your body. Desiccated thyroid is prescribed when the thyroid is unable to make enough of this hormone on its own.

Desiccated thyroid helps treat the condition of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Desiccated thyroid can also be utilized to prevent or treat goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) and is included in medical examinations for thyroid disorders.Desiccated thyroid shouldn't be employed to treat overweight or weight issues.Desiccated thyroid can be utilized for other purposes not covered in this medication guide.

Side effects of Nature-Throid

Contact a medical professional immediately. If you are experiencing warning signs of an allergic response, such as symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your lips, face, and tongue,Common side effects include short-term loss of hair (especially for children).

Warnings

You might not be able to take Nature-Throid in the case of an illness of the thyroid known as thyrotoxicosis or a condition of the adrenal gland that cannot be controlled with treatment.

Consult your physician if you notice symptoms of thyroid toxicity, for example, chest pains, pounding or fast heartbeats, feeling nauseous or hot, and excessive sweating more than normal.

Before you take this drug

Since thyroid hormone is a natural component within the body, nearly everybody can take desiccated thyroid. However, you might not be able to use this treatment if you suffer from an illness that causes thyroid dysfunction called thyrotoxicosis or an adrenal gland disorder that cannot be controlled with treatment.

To ensure that desiccated thyroid is suitable for you, inform your physician if you are:

  • The heart condition, angina (chest pain);
  • Coronary arterial disease;
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Any form of diabetes
  • Issues related to issues with your adrenal gland.

Desiccated thyroid should not be thought to cause harm to unborn babies, but the dosage requirements may differ in the course of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you get pregnant while you are taking the medication.

Desiccated thyroid in small amounts could be found in the milk of a nursing baby, but it will not cause harm to the baby who is nursing. However, don't use this medication without consulting your physician if you're nursing babies.

How to take Nature-Throid?

Follow the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor could change the dosage to ensure that you receive the most effective results. Don't use Nature-Throid in smaller or larger amounts or for a longer time than the recommended time.

If you use desiccated thyroid, it is possible that you will require frequent blood tests.

Continue to take this medication according to the directions, even if you are not feeling well. You might need to use thyroid medications for the rest of your life.

Contact your doctor if you observe any indications of thyroid dysfunction, such as chest pain, quick or rapid heartbeats, sensations of being uncomfortable or anxious, or sweating more than normal.

If you require surgery, inform your surgeon prior to surgery that you're using desiccated thyroid. It may be necessary to stop taking the medication for a brief period of time.Keep at room temperature, free of heat and moisture.

What happens If I miss a dose?

Do the dose you missed as soon as you can remember. Do not take your missed dose if it's nearing the time for the next dose. Don't take any extra medication to make up for the missed dose.

What happens If I overdose?

Get medical attention in an emergency or contact the Poison Help line toll-free at 1-800-222-1222.

What should be avoided?

If you are also taking cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran) or colestipol (Colestid), do not take these drugs within 4 hours prior to or after taking desiccated thyroid.

Do not take an antacid for more than 4 hours prior to or after the administration of desiccated thyroid. Certain anti-inflammatory medications could make it more difficult for the body to take in the desiccated thyroid.

Interaction with other drugs

Discuss with your doctor any medications you are taking, start taking, or stop taking during your treatment for desiccated thyroid, particularly:

  • Birth control tablets and hormone therapy
  • A blood thinner like warfarin, coumadin, or Jantoven;
  • Insulin or a diabetes medication that you can take orally;
  • Drugs that contain the element iodine (such as I-131, for instance);
  • Steroids, such as prednisone and other steroids.
