What is Metamucil?
Metamucil, a fiber-forming laxative, is prescribed to treat occasional diarrhea and bowel irregularities. When combined with a low-cholesterol and high-saturated-fat diet, metamucil can also lower cholesterol. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Metamucil.
Side effects of Metamucil
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy reaction, seek immediate medical attention: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue.
Metamucil may cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Constipation lasting more than seven days
- Rectal bleeding
- Severe stomach pain.
Metamucil side effects may include:
- Bloating;
- Minor changes in your bowel habit.

Before you take this drug
If you've ever experienced an allergic reaction, then Metamucil is not for you.
If you've ever:
- Stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting;
- Trouble swallowing
- A sudden and lasting change in the bowel habit that lasts more than two weeks
The medication may also contain sodium or sugar. If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, or PKU (phenylketonuria), you should check the label of your medication. You may need a different dose during pregnancy and while nursing. Metamucil should not be given to children younger than six years of age without consulting a doctor.
How to take Metamucil?
Follow the instructions on the packaging or those prescribed by your physician. If you do not take Metamucil with sufficient liquid, it can cause swelling in the throat. To improve your bowel movements, drink plenty of water each day. Metamucil should be taken with 8 ounces of water or another liquid. Metamucil should be taken in one capsule at a given time. Before you use Metamucil, the powder needs to be mixed with liquid. The dry powder should not be swallowed. Add 8 ounces or more of liquid, such as fruit juice or water. Mix and consume this mix immediately. Pour a bit more water into the glass and swirl it gently. Drink immediately. Metamucil produces a bowel motion within 12 to 72 hours. If your symptoms don't improve or worsen, call your doctor. Metamucil is only one part of an overall treatment plan that includes exercise, diet, and weight management. You should follow your doctor’s advice. Keep the container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. When not in use, keep the container closed.
What happens if I miss the dose?
Metamucil can be taken as needed, and you don't need to follow a schedule.If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take only what is necessary. Never take two doses in one go.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect poisoning and seek immediate medical help.
What should be avoided?
When mixing Metamucil, avoid breathing in the dust. This medicine may cause allergic reactions if inhaled. Avoid eating high-fat or cholesterol-rich foods if you are taking Metamucil in conjunction with a treatment to lower cholesterol. Otherwise, your treatment may not be effective.
Interaction with other drug
As a result, other medications may become less effective.Take any other oral medications 2 hours prior to or 2 hours following the time you are taking this medication.
Metamucil can be affected by other drugs, such as prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products.Inform your doctor of all medications you are currently taking as well as those you take for the first time or stop or begin using.
