
What is Meropenem and vaborbactam?
Antibiotics such as vaborbactam and meropenem are used to fight bacteria. Combination medicine Meropenem/Vaborbactam is used for treating serious infections of the urinary system in adults. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for vaborbactam and meropenem.
Side effects of Meropenem and vaborbactam
If you experience symptoms of an allergy such as hives, difficulty breathing or swelling, or in the face and throat, a severe reaction to your skin is required (fever or soreness in the throat, burning or pain in your eyes or skin, or red, purple, or blistered skin that has spread and caused peeling and blisters).
Both vaborbactam and meropenem can cause severe side effects. If you experience:
- Diarrhoea that is bloody or watery, severe abdominal pain
- A seizure (convulsions);
- Sores, white patches, or sore throats (yeast infections or "thrush");
- A severe feeling of tingling, numbness, or pain;
- Unusual bleeding or bruises
Meropenem or vaborbactam can cause the following side effects:
- Headache;
- Diarrhea;
- Injection sites may be swollen or irritated.

Tell your doctor before you get meropenem or vaborbactam if you've ever had an allergy to any anti-biotic medication.
Before you take this drug
If you've ever experienced an allergic reaction, this medication may not work for you.
- Meropenem vaborbactam
- Amoxicillin, ampicillin, Augmentin, Timentin, Unasyn, Zosyn;
- Dicloxacillin, nafcillin, oxacillin, and ticarcillin;
- Any penicillin antibiotic.
Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that meropenem or vaborbactam will be safe for you:
- An allergy to cephalosporins (cephalexin, cefdinir, Keflex, Omnicef, etc.);
- A head injury or brain tumor;
- Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
- Kidney disease or dialysis (if applicable)
This medicine is unknown to cause harm to an unborn child. Inform your doctor that you're pregnant. The effects of vaborbactam and meropenem on nursing babies are unknown. Inform your doctor that you are breastfeeding.
How to take Meropenem and vaborbactam?
Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration of use. Use meropenem or vaborbactam only at the recommended dose. Through an IV, meropenem or vaborbactam are injected directly into the vein. It is possible that you will be taught how to administer an IV yourself. You should not administer this medication to yourself if you don't know how to inject the medicine and dispose of IV tubes, needles, and other used items. Usually, meropenem and vaborbactam are given for up to fourteen days at a time. The infusion of this medicine can last up to 3 hours. The powdered medicine Meropenem or vaborbactam must first be dissolved in a liquid, and only then can it be used. You should know how to mix the medication and store it properly if you use the injections in your home.
If you store the diluted solution at room temperature, it must be consumed within four hours. Use the IV bag within 22 hours if you keep it in the fridge. Never freeze. The meropenem powder and vaborbactam in the single-use bottle (vial) are only for one-time use. After one usage, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside. Mixing other medications with meropenem or vaborbactam in the same bag or tube used for your injection is not recommended. After your IV infusion, throw away all the unused medication left in the bag. You should not keep it to use later. Do not stop taking the medicine before it is completely cleared. You may experience symptoms before your infection has completely resolved. YSkipping doses could increase the risk of another, resistant infection. Vaborbactam and meropenem will not work to treat viral infections, such as the cold.
You may be required to have your kidney function checked if you use this medication. Keep powders unmixed at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Only use a disposable syringe and needle once. Use syringes and needles only once.Question your pharmacist on where and how you can obtain a puncture proof sharps' disposal container; keep this out of reach from both pets and children.

Adult dose for pyelonephritis:
Every 8 hours, 4 g of IV
Treatment duration: up to 14 days
Use: To treat patients with urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis) caused by susceptible Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter species complexes.

What happens if I miss the dose?
As soon as possible, take the dose you missed. If it is nearing time for your next dose, pass over any missed one and wait.You should not take extra medication to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisonous ingestion and seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible.
What should be avoided?
Meropenem or vaborbactam may cause headaches or confusion. This can impair thinking and reactions. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires alertness. Diarrhea can be caused by antibiotics, and this could indicate a new illness.Call your physician immediately if you experience diarrhea that's watery or bloody. You should only take anti-diarrhea medication if your doctor has prescribed it.
Interaction with other drug
Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you will stop or start using.
- Divalproex sodium;
- Probenecid;
- Valproic acid.
