Lexiscan

Drug class: cardiac stress agents.
Generic name: Regadenoson.

What is Lexiscan?

Lexiscan works as a stress reliever by increasing the blood flow through the heart's arteries.Lexiscan may be given to prepare for an x-ray examination of the blood flow in the heart, which is used to check for coronary arterial disease.Lexiscan can be used in other ways than those listed in the medication guide.

Warnings

If you suffer from a serious condition of the heart, such as an AV block (or "sick sinus syndrome"), or if you do not have a pacemaker, you should not take Lexiscan.If you experience a serious side-effect, such as chest pain, a heavy feeling or pain that spreads to your jaw or shoulder; sweating, a general feeling of ill health; wheezing, difficulty breathing or slowed heart rate; severe headaches, seizures (convulsions); slowed breathing or fainting,

Before you take this drug

If you are allergic or have serious heart conditions, such as:

  • 2nd or third-degree AV block
  • "Sick sinus syndrome" is not a problem unless you are wearing a pacemaker.

Lexiscan can increase your risk of abnormal heartbeats and breathing problems. It may also increase the likelihood of a stroke, heart attack, or cardiac arrest. Speak to your doctor regarding your risk.

Tell your doctor about any recent illness, such as nausea and diarrhoea.

  • COPD is a more severe form of asthma (chronic obstructive lung disease).
  • Chest pain or heart problems
  • Blood circulation problems
  • Coronary artery disease (clogged vessels)
  • Seizures;
  • Heart disease or high blood pressure.
  • If you are also taking dipyridamole or theophylline,

This medicine is not known to harm an unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.Do not breastfeed for 10 hours following the receipt of Lexiscan. Throw away any milk collected if you are using a breast pump. Do not give it to your child.

How to take Lexiscan?

Lexiscan can be injected into a vein. This injection will be given by a healthcare provider.Other intravenous (IV) medications may be administered to allow the blood vessels on the radiologic exam to be more clearly seen.During your stress test, you will be closely monitored for vital signs such as oxygen levels, breathing, blood pressure, and more.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for radionuclide myocardial perfusion study:

Use a catheter or needle of 22 gauge or greater to inject 0.4 mg into a vein in the peripheral area.
Comment: Administer 5 mL of saline immediately after the injection of this medication. After the saline rinse, administer the radionuclide imaging agent for myocardial blood flow 10 to 20 seconds later. The radionuclide can be injected into the same catheter with this drug.
Use: radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) for patients who are unable to exercise.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Lexiscan will be administered by a healthcare provider in preparation for a medical test. You are unlikely to have a schedule of dosages.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses are unlikely because this medication is administered by a health professional in a medical environment.

What should be avoided?

Avoid caffeine-containing beverages, such as coffee and other drinks, for 12 hours prior to your stress test.

Side effects of  Lexiscan

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, please seek emergency medical attention.

If you:

  • Dizziness and rapid heartbeats are symptoms of severe
  • Wheezing, chest pain, and difficulty breathing
  • Weak or shallow breathing
  • Pain in your chest or pressure that spreads to your jaw, shoulder, or neck
  • A seizure;
  • Low blood pressure: feeling light-headed, as if you could pass out.
  • High blood pressure, a severe headache, or pounding in the neck or ears
  • Signs of a Stroke: sudden numbness, weakness, or slurred words, especially on one side.

Some of the common side effects that Lexiscan can cause include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Headache, dizziness;
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea;
  • Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly sensation)

Interaction with other drug

You should not take certain medicines within 12 hours of receiving Lexiscan. Inform your doctor of all medicines you take, including:

  • Aminophylline;
  • Dipyridamole

Regadenoson may interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
