Generic Name: Terbinafine (terBIN-nafeen)

What is Lamisil?

Lamisil is a medication that combats fungus-related infections.Lamisil tablets treat infections that are caused by fungus and affect either the fingernails or toenails.Lamisil oral granules are used to treat fungal infections of the scalp and hair follicles. This medication, however, is no longer available for children over 4 years old.

Warnings

Some people who take Lamisil develop severe liver damage that can lead to liver transplants or death.Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms: nausea, upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, dark urine or stools with clay coloration, and jaundice. You can experience these symptoms whether you've ever had liver issues before.

Before you take this drug

Lamisil should not be used if:

  • Liver disease

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Lamisil will be safe for you:

  • Liver problems
  • Kidney problems;
  • A weak immune system can be caused by certain diseases or medicines.

Terbinafine is not known to harm a developing baby. Wait until after pregnancy to treat your nail or scalp infections with Lamisil. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while on treatment.Terbinafine may pass into breastmilk and harm nursing babies. Breastfeeding mothers must not take this medicine.

How to take Lamisil?

Follow the instructions on your prescription label. Please follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Take this medication only as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or take it for longer.Take the tablet with food or without.The granules of Lamisil should be sprinkled on a spoonful or mashed potato (do not mix with apple sauce, fruit juice, or any other acidic or fruity foods). This mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing; don't store for later consumption!Lamisil can be taken for up to 12 weeks for toenail or scalp infections.Do not stop taking the medication before it has fully cleared from your system. You may experience symptoms before the infection has completely cleared. You may increase your chances of a second infection resistant to antifungal medication if you skip doses. Terbinafine does not treat viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.You may need to have frequent blood tests while taking this medication.After Lamisil treatment, it may take a few months before your nails return to normal.Store away from moisture, light, heat, and heat. Keep the oral granules sealed in their original packet until ready to use.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as you realize, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching, skip the missed dose. Assume you may have missed a dose and do not take additional medicine in an attempt to make up for it.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect poisoning and seek immediate medical care.Overdose symptoms include headaches, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, a rash, and increased urination.

What should be avoided?

Avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, and other products. Lamisil can prolong the effects of caffeine.Avoid tanning beds or exposure to sunlight. Terbinafine may cause you to sunburn more easily. When you're outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen (SPF 30) or higher.

Side effects of  Lamisil

If you experience any of the following: hives (burning in your eyes, difficulty breathing, or swelling in your face and throat), or a severe reaction (fever, sore mouth, blistering, peeling skin, or burning in your eye),Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a severe drug reaction. This can include a skin rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms. Other symptoms may include muscle pain, weakness, unusual bruises, or yellowing in the skin or eyes. This reaction can occur weeks after starting to use terbinafine.Those who took Lamisil developed liver damage that required liver transplantation or even death. Terbinafine may have caused liver damage in some patients, but it is unclear whether this was the cause. Most patients had serious medical conditions before taking this medication.Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms: nausea, upper abdominal pain, vomiting (including a sour taste), fatigue, dark urine or stools with a clay colour, or jaundice. You can experience these symptoms whether you've ever had liver issues before.

Call your doctor immediately if you:

  • Changes in your sense of smell or taste
  • Feeling anxious, restless, or depressed?
  • Pale skin, easy bruising (nose, mouth, or vagina), purple or pink pinpoint spots under the skin;
  • Weight gain and swelling are rapid, but there is little or no urinating.
  • Blood in urine or stool;
  • Weight loss due to changes in taste or appetite
  • Skin sores or a butterfly-shaped rash that appears on the cheeks and nose. This condition is worse in sunlight.

Lamisil may cause side effects such as:

  • Gas, diarrhoea, or stomach pains and upsets;
  • Rash;
  • Headache
  • Abnormal liver function tests

Interaction with other drug

Terbinafine may interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your healthcare providers of all medications you are currently taking and those you plan to start or stop.
