Invega Hafyera (injection)

What is Invega Hafyera?

Paliperidone can be used to treat schizophrenia in adults. Paliperidone can also be used in combination with other medications to treat schizophrenia. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of paliperidone.

Side effects of Invega Hafyera

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following signs of a serious disorder of movement:

  • You may experience tremors in your legs or arms.
  • Uncontrolled facial muscle movements (laughing, lip-smacking, and frowning; tongue movement, blinking, or eye movement);
  • Any new or unusual muscular movements that you cannot control

Invega Hafyera may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Shortness of breath and sudden dizziness are all symptoms of low blood pressure.
  • Unsteadiness or problems with the mind
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Seizure;
  • Breast swelling, tenderness, and nipple discharge.
  • Weight gain;
  • Fever; sore neck; feeling light-headed.
  • Uneven blood cell counts
  • Dry mouth and fruity breath smell;
  • Severe nervous system reaction: very stiff (rigid muscles), high fever, tremors, and confusion.
  • Impotence is a painful erection or one that lasts more than four hours.
  • Changes in your menstrual cycle

Invega Hafyera can cause the following side effects:

  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Cold symptoms may include stuffy noses, sneezing fits and sore throats;
  • Feeling restless or excited
  • Muscle stiffness, shaking, or tremors
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements; problems speaking or walking
  • Problems with eye or balance movements;
  • Weight gain
  • Upset stomach, constipation;
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Pain, swelling, or irritation at the injection site

Warnings

Paliperidone has not been approved for older adults suffering from dementia or psychosis.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to risperidone or Risperdal. Paliperidone is not approved to be used in this way. It may increase the death risk for older adults who have dementia-related psychosis.

Paliperidone in high doses or for a long time can cause serious movement disorders that are not always reversible. Paliperidone can cause serious movement disorders, which may not be reversible. Tell your doctor before you receive your first shot if you've never taken paliperidone (risperidone) orally.

Notify your doctor of any of the following conditions:

  • Heart problems or an attack
  • Long-QT syndrome
  • High or low blood pressure or fainting episodes;
  • Low white blood cell counts
  • A serious neurologic disorder that is caused by antipsychotic medication;
  • Uncontrolled facial movements (such as lip smacking and frowning; tongue movements, blinking, or eye movements);
  • Seizures or epilepsy;
  • An electrolyte imbalance is a low potassium or magnesium blood level.
  • Diabetes
  • Breast cancer
  • Liver or kidney disease

Paliperidone is not known to harm unborn babies. Inform your physician immediately if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant.

Antipsychotic medication taken in the last three months of pregnancy can cause serious problems for the baby. Notify your doctor as soon as you become pregnant. You may find your name on a registry for pregnant women to monitor the effects of the drug on the child. Ask your doctor if you can safely breastfeed while taking this medication.

how to take Invega Hafyera?

Paliperidone can be injected directly into the muscle. This injection will be given by a healthcare provider. Invega Sustenna should be taken only once a month. The first two doses, however, are separated by one week. Invega Trinza can be given every three months after using Invega Sustenna. Invega hafeera should be given every six months after using Invega sustenna or Invega trinza for a minimum of four consecutive months.

Continue to be under the supervision of your doctor when using paliperidone. Paliperidone should be taken regularly to achieve the best results. You will need to have your doctor check on you regularly.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you missed your appointment to receive your paliperidone, call your doctor and ask for instructions.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include feeling drowsy, unsteady, or having a fast heartbeat.

What should be avoided?

Don't drink alcohol. Alcohol can have dangerous side effects. Drink enough fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during exercise or in hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink.

Do not drive or engage in any hazardous activities until you have experienced the effects of this medication. Dizziness and drowsiness may cause accidents or serious injuries. You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying position.

Interaction with other drug

It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications at the same time. Some drugs may affect the blood levels of drugs that you are taking, causing side effects or making them less effective.

Paliperidone can be affected by many drugs. These include prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. This list does not include all possible interactions. Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking.
