What is Hydroxyprogesterone injection?

The man-made hormone progesterone is called hydroxyprogesterone.The use of hydroxyprogesterone can lower the risk of premature births in women who have already given birth to a premature baby. Hydroxyprogesterone does not stop premature labor once it has begun.Women who are expecting more than one child (twins or triplets) should not use hydroxyprogesterone.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of hydroxyprogesterone.

Side effects of Hydroxyprogesterone injection

If you experience any of the following: hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat,

Hydroxyprogesterone injections may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • The injection site may swell, bleed, or cause pain to worsen.
  • Jaundice
  • Symptoms of depression include sleep problems, fatigue, and mood changes.
  • You may experience swelling of your ankles, feet, or hands.
  • Increased blood pressure; severe headache; blurred vision; pounding in the neck or ears; anxiety Nosebleed.
  • Signs of a blood clot include sudden numbness, weakness, or problems with speech or vision, as well as swelling or redness on an arm or leg.

Side effects of hydroxyprogesterone may include:

  • Pain, swelling, itching, rash, or lump at the injection site;
  • Nausea;

Warnings

If you are pregnant, you should avoid using hydroxyprogesterone if you suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure, abnormal vaginal bleeding, or liver cancer. You also shouldn't use it if your circulation is affected, you have had a stroke, a blood clot, or cancer in the uterus, cervix, or breast.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding is not associated with your pregnancy.
  • Uncontrolled or severe high blood pressure;
  • Liver disease or liver cancer
  • Jaundice during pregnancy
  • A history of breast, uterus, cervix, or vaginal cancer;
  • A history of stroke, blood clots, or circulation issues

Anyone younger than 16 is not allowed to use hydroxyprogesterone.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Preeclampsia and eclampsia are both conditions that can occur during pregnancy.
  • Kidney disease
  • High blood pressure, heart disease
  • Migraine headaches
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Asthma

It is unknown if hydroxyprogesterone can prevent medical problems for a newborn. Speak to your doctor regarding the individual risks for your baby.

How to take Hydroxyprogesterone injection?

Inject hydroxyprogesterone under the skin or into muscular tissue.This injection will be administered by a healthcare provider.The first injection of hydroxyprogesterone is typically given in the second trimester. One injection per week is the usual schedule until the 37th week, or until you deliver your baby. Please follow your doctor's advice.Your doctor must check on your progress regularly. Keep all scheduled appointments. All pregnant women should be under the care and supervision of their doctor.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for premature labor:

The treatment should start between 16 weeks and 6 days of gestation.
Intramuscularly: 250 mg IM every 7 days in the upper outer quadrant (gluteus maximus)
Subcutaneously: 275mg subcutaneously every 7 days at the back of each upper arm
Duration: Continue administration every week up to week 37 (36 weeks and 6 days of gestation) or delivery, whichever comes first.
Comments:
This drug is only effective in women who have had a singleton spontaneous preterm delivery. It should not be used by women with multiple pregnancies or other preterm risk factors.
Use: To reduce preterm delivery risk in women who have had a previous singleton spontaneous birth.

Usual pediatric dose for premature labor:

16 years and older
The treatment should start between 16 weeks and 6 days of gestation.
Intramuscularly: 250 mg IM every 7 days in the upper outer quadrant (gluteus maximus)

If you are unable to make your appointment for your hydroxyprogesterone shot, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies, may also affect hydroxyprogesterone. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you will begin or stop using.
