What is Hydrochlorothiazide and olmesartan?

Hydrochlorothiazide works as a diuretic. Olmesartan, also known as an ARB blocker or angiotensin II receptor blocker, is an angiotensin receptor blocker.Combination medicine Hydrochlorothiazide and olmesartan treat hypertension. Reduced blood pressure can reduce your risk of a stroke or heart attack.It is often prescribed after other blood-pressure medicines have failed or stopped working.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for hydrochlorothiazide or olmesartan.

Side effects of hydrochlorothiazide and olmesartan

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat.In rare cases, hydrochlorothiazide or olmesartan may cause a condition resulting in the breakdown of muscle tissue. This can lead to renal failure. If you experience unexplained pain or tenderness or if your urine is dark in color, you should call your doctor immediately.

Call your doctor immediately if you:

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • Eye pain and vision problems
  • An unusual skin rash;
  • Easy bruising and unusual bleeding
  • Jaundice
  • Kidney problems: little or no urination; painful or difficult urination; swelling of the feet or ankles; feeling tired or short of breath.
  • Low levels of sodium can cause: headache; confusion; slurred or slurred-up speech; severe weakness. Nausea.
  • High potassium: slow or unusual heartbeat, weakness, or loss of mobility;
  • Low sodium, leg cramps, constipation, increased thirst and urination, numbness, tingling or numbness, muscle weakness, or a limp feeling

Side effects that are common include:

  • Nausea;
  • Dizziness;
  • Sore or stuffy throat, or cold symptoms, such as a stuffy nose and sneezing.
  • High levels of uric acid in your blood.

Warnings

This medicine should not be used if you cannot urinate.Do not use this product if pregnant.You should not take hydrochlorothiazide or olmesartan if you have diabetes with any other medication that contains aliskiren.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to hydrochlorothiazide, olmesartan, or both, or if you cannot urinate normally, you should not take hydrochlorothiazide.Do not take olmesartan and hydrochlorothiazide together with aliskiren, a blood pressure medication, if you have diabetes.If you have kidney problems, you may need to avoid using aliskiren with hydrochlorothiazide or olmesartan.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Glaucoma;
  • Your potassium levels could either be low or high.
  • Allergies or asthma
  • High cholesterol or triglyceride levels
  • Gout;
  • Lupus;
  • Diabetes
  • An allergy is a reaction to penicillin or sulfa drugs.

You should not take this medicine if you're pregnant. If you are pregnant, stop using the medication and immediately tell your doctor. Olmesartan may cause harm or even death to an unborn child if taken during the second or third trimester.This medicine should not be used while breastfeeding.

How to take Hydrochlorothiazide with olmesartan?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow the directions. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. You must take the medication exactly as prescribed.You will need to check your blood pressure often.If you experience persistent nausea or diarrhea or are perspiring more often than normal, call your doctor. This medication can cause you to become dehydrated, leading to low pressure and a serious electrolyte imbalance.Tell your doctor if you plan to undergo surgery or any medical tests that you will be taking hydrochlorothiazide.This medication may take 4 weeks to bring down your blood pressure. Continue to take this medication as prescribed, even if your symptoms are normal. Often, high blood pressure is not accompanied by any symptoms. It is possible that you will need to take blood pressure medications for the rest of your life.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:

Orally, Hydrochlorothiazide 12,5 to 25 mg; Olmesartan 20, 30, 40 mg once daily
Comments:
If olmesartan is not controlling blood pressure, then hydrochlorothiazide can be added, starting at a dose of 12.5mg once daily.
If you have used large doses as monotherapy and there is volume depletion or hyponatremia, be cautious when adding olmesartan. This may cause a marked drop in blood pressure. Consider reducing the hydrochlorothiazide dose to 12.5mg before adding olmesartan.
The dose can be adjusted every 2 to 4 weeks.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.Overdose symptoms include feeling lightheaded or fainting.

What should be avoided?

The use of hydrochlorothiazide can increase your risk of skin cancer. Avoid tanning beds or sunlight. When you're outdoors, wear protective clothing and use sunblock with an SPF of 30 or more. You may be asked to undergo regular skin checks by your doctor.

Use potassium supplements and salt substitutes only if your doctor recommends them.Alcohol can lower blood pressure further and cause adverse effects.Do not drive or engage in any hazardous activities until you have thoroughly studied the effects of hydrochlorothiazide (olmesartan) on you. You could have impaired reactions. You may feel dizzy if you get up quickly from a seated or lying position.

Interaction with other drug

Take your hydrochlorothiazide or olmesartan 4 hours before taking cholestyramine (or colestipol) or 4 hours after.

Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:

  • Steroids;
  • Any other blood pressure medication;
  • Insulin, or oral diabetes medication;
  • Lithium
  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and indomethacin are all nsaids.
