What is Hydrochlorothiazide and Enalapril?

Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide (water pill), and enalapril is an ACE (ACE stands for the angiotensin-converting enzyme). Combination medicine for hypertension (high blood pressure)This medication guide does not list all possible uses of hydrochlorothiazide or enalapril.

Side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide and Enalapril:

If you experience symptoms of an allergic response (hives), a severe reaction to your skin (fever or skin pains, a burning sensation in your eyes or face, or severe swelling in the face or throat), or if your skin is irritated (fever or skin pains, a sore throat or skin, or rashes that are red or purple and cause blistering or peeling), seek emergency medical attention.If you're African-American, your chances of having an allergic reaction are higher.

Enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • Jaundice
  • Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around light
  • Fever, chills, and flu-like symptoms; sore throats and mouth sores
  • Signs of electrolyte deficiency: leg cramps, constipation or muscle pain, jitteriness, increased thirst, urination or numbness, and loss of mobility;
  • If you have kidney problems, it could be that your urine is not as frequent or that you are experiencing swelling of the feet or ankles or feeling tired.
  • Joint discomfort and new or worsening lupus symptoms, including a rash that gets worse in the sun on your arms or cheeks.

Side effects associated with hydrochlorothiazide or enalapril include:

  • Dizziness.
  • Cough.
  • Headache.

Warnings

Use this product only if you're not pregnant. Stop taking hydrochlorothiazide or enalapril if you get pregnant and inform your doctor immediately.This medicine should not be used if your urination is impaired, if angioedema has ever occurred, or if sulfa drugs or any ACE inhibitors cause allergies. Do not take enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide within 36 hours of taking any medicine that contains sacubitril, such as Entresto.Do not take enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide together if you have diabetes.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to hydrochlorothiazide, enalapril, or:

  • You are unable to urinate.
  • You have had angioedema before.
  • You recently took a medicine for your heart called sacubitril.
  • You are allergic to sulfa medications.
  • You are allergic to ACE inhibitors (benazepril, captopril, fosinopril, lisinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, and trandolapril).

You should not take enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide within 36 hours of taking a medicine that contains sacubitril, such as Entersto.Do not take aliskiren, a blood pressure medication, with hydrochlorothiazide or enalapril if you have diabetes.If you have kidney problems, you may need to avoid using enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide with aliskiren.

Notify your physician immediately of any of the following issues:

  • Allergies or asthma
  • Kidney disease (or dialysis if you have it);
  • Liver disease, or cirrhosis.
  • Glaucoma;
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Gout;
  • An electrolyte imbalance is a low potassium or magnesium level in the blood.
  • Lupus;
  • If you have an allergy to penicillin.
  • If you're on a diet low in salt.

You should not take this medicine if you're pregnant. Enalapril may cause harm or even death to an unborn child if taken during the second or third trimester.While using this medication, you should not breastfeed.

How to take Hydrochlorothiazide and Enalapril??

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow the directions. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. You must take the medication exactly as prescribed.If you experience nausea, diarrhea, or are perspiring excessively, call your doctor. It is easy to become dehydrated when taking hydrochlorothiazide with enalapril. This can cause very low blood pressure or electrolyte disorders, as well as renal failure.You will need to check your blood pressure regularly. You may need to check your kidney function. If you are dehydrated or have vomited, your blood and urine will be tested.Tell your surgeon if you plan to undergo surgery that you're taking enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide.Even if you are feeling well, continue to take hydrochlorothiazide or enalapril according to the instructions. It is common for high blood pressure to have no symptoms. Blood pressure medications may be needed for the rest of your life.Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep the tablets and the moisture-absorbing preservative in the original containers.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:

Enalapril 5 to 10 mg; hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 to 25 mg orally once a day
Maximum dose: Enalapril 20 mg; Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg per day.
After 2 to 3 weeks, the dosage of hydrochlorothiazide can be increased.
Use: Only after monotherapy or titrated components have failed to produce the desired effects.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.Overdose symptoms include feeling thirsty, lightheaded, or fainting.

What should be avoided?

Use potassium supplements and salt substitutes only if your doctor recommends them.Drink enough fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during exercise or in hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink.You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying position. Alcohol consumption can increase the side effects of hydrochlorothiazide or enalapril.

Interaction with other drug

Tell your doctor all the medicines you are taking. Hydroc hlorothiazide, enalapril, and other drugs can be affected by:

  • Other blood pressure medications, including another diuretic (water pill) or other medication to lower blood pressure;
  • Digoxin;
  • Lithium;
  • Cancer Medicine
  • Gold injections for arthritis
  • Insulin, or oral diabetes medication
  • A muscle relaxer;
  • Medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection—cyclosporine, everolimus, sirolimus, tacrolimus,
  • Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Diclofenac, and Indomethacin are all nsaids.
