Genace

Generic names: acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine [ah-see-ta-MIH-no-fin, AH-sprin, CAH-feen].
Brand names: Excedrin, Excedrin Geltab and Excedrin Migraine tablets from Excedrin Pharma as well as Genace, Goodys Extra Strength Headache Powders and Supac are amongst some of the medications offered for migraine sufferers.

What is Genace?

Acetaminophen can be used to relieve pain and reduce fever. Aspirin belongs to a group of drugs known as salicylates. It reduces substances that cause inflammation and pain in the body. This product contains caffeine to enhance the pain-relieving effects of aspirin and acetaminophen. Genace can be used to treat conditions like headaches (including migraines), menstrual cramps or aches, arthritis, backaches, toothaches, and colds. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Genace.

Warnings

Stop taking Genace if your symptoms don't improve or worsen. Contact your doctor. Genace is not a good time to drink alcohol. Alcohol, acetaminophen, and aspirin together can damage the stomach and liver. Genace should not be taken if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks per day. You should check the label of any other medications you take to see how much acetaminophen or caffeine is in them. Take no more than one acetaminophen- or aspirin-containing product in a single day, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise. This product contains approximately the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee. While taking this product, limit the consumption of foods, beverages, and medications containing caffeine. A caffeine overdose can cause nervousness, irritability, and sleeplessness.

Before you take this drug

Genace is not a good time to drink alcohol. Alcohol, acetaminophen, and aspirin together can damage the stomach and liver. Genace should not be taken if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks per day.

Tell your doctor before taking Genace if you have any of the following:

  • Aspirin can cause an allergic reaction or other problems.
  • Have an allergy or have a problem after taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, Orudis KT (Orudis, Oruvail), nabumetone, Daypro, Naprosyn, etc.
  • Increase the consumption of three or more alcoholic drinks daily.
  • Never had migraines properly diagnosed by a physician;
  • Have a headache different from or more severe than your usual migraines?
  • Have daily headaches
  • Have a headache after or as a result of a head injury or exertion.
  • You may have your first headache at age 50.
  • Have an ulcer or bleeding on the stomach.
  • Have liver disease
  • Have kidney disease
  • Have a bleeding disorder or blood clotting disorder (e.g., hemophilia);
  • High blood pressure
  • Have gout?
  • Asthma is a serious condition.
  • Have nasal polyps
  • Have you had anxiety or insomnia?

If you suffer from any of the above conditions, you may not be able to take Genace. You may also need a dose adjustment or extra monitoring during your treatment. Genace is not known to be harmful to an unborn child. Aspirin during pregnancy can affect the heart of an unborn child, cause birth defects, or have other harmful effects. Genace should not be taken without consulting your doctor first if you're pregnant or may become pregnant while taking the medication. The nursing infant may be affected by Genace. If you are breastfeeding a child, do not take Genace before consulting your doctor. Genace should not be used to treat children or teens with fever, flu symptoms, or chicken pox. Consult the doctor before using Genace. Aspirin can increase the risk of Reye’s syndrome in children under 18 years old. This is a rare, but fatal, condition.

How to take Genace?

Follow the directions on the label or the doctor's instructions. Ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor if you don't understand the directions. Each tablet or capsule should be taken with a glass of water. This will ensure that the medication is properly swallowed. Genace should not be taken in excess. Genace taken in excess can be harmful. Stop using Genace if your symptoms don't improve or worsen. Contact your doctor. Genace contains caffeine, which can cause difficulty sleeping. Genace should be stored at room temperature, away from heat or moisture.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as possible, take any medication you missed as soon as it crosses your mind.Genace should not be taken in two doses.

What happens if I overdose?

If you suspect an overdose, seek medical help immediately. Overdose symptoms of Genace include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, sweating, seizures, confusion, and an irregular heartbeat.

What should be avoided?

Avoid other over-the-counter or prescription medicines that contain aspirin. These include salicylates and NSAIDs. These medicines are dangerous when combined with aspirin. Genace is not a good time to drink alcohol. Alcohol, acetaminophen, and aspirin together can damage the stomach and liver. Genace should not be taken if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks per day. You should check the label of any other medications you take to see how much acetaminophen or caffeine is in them. Take no more than one acetaminophen- or aspirin-containing product in a single day, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise. A caffeine overdose can cause irritability and nervousness. It may also lead to sleeplessness and a rapid heartbeat. Inform your dentist and doctor that you take aspirin. This is especially important if you have to undergo surgery. Aspirin may prolong the bleeding.

Side effects of Genace

Stop taking Genace immediately if you experience any serious side effects, and contact your doctor or seek immediate medical attention.

  • An allergic reaction is difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or hives.
  • Liver damage (yellowing or browning of the skin, eyes, or stomach; nausea or abdominal pain; bruising or bleeding that is unusual; fatigue; or severe fatigue);
  • Blood problems (easily or abnormally bleeding or bruising)
  • Black, bloody, or tarry stools
  • Vomiting, nausea, or abdominal pain
  • Uncontrolled fever
  • Blood in urine or vomit
  • Hearing loss or ringing of the ears
  • Seizures;
  • Dizziness, confusion, or hallucinations

Genace is unlikely to cause these side effects. Stop taking genace immediately if you notice any side effects. Consult your doctor if necessary.

Notify your doctor if you experience any of these less serious side effects:

  • Heartburn or indigestion;
  • Anxiety, nervousness, or sleep problems.

Other side effects may occur. Speak to your doctor if you experience any unusual side effects or if they are particularly bothersome.

Interaction with other drug

You should check the label of any other medications you take to see how much acetaminophen or caffeine is in them. Take no more than one acetaminophen- or aspirin-containing product on the same day unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.

Genace should not be taken without consulting your doctor first if you take any of the following medications:

  • A blood thinner, such as warfarin or heparin.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (nsaid): ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, piroxicam, etodolac, flurbiprofen, sulindac, or tolmetin.
  • Another salicylate is used for pain, arthritis, and fever (bayer select backache pain formula (magan), doan's (arthropan, trilisate, and tricosal), as well as choline and/or magnesium salts (magan, doan's), and/or salicylate (disalcid).
  • A medicine to treat diabetes
  • A medicine to treat gout.

If you take any of these medicines, you may need to adjust your dosage or undergo special monitoring. Other drugs may interact with Genace and cause side effects or alter the effectiveness of medications.
