What is Gadavist?

Gadavist is an agent of contrast that exhibits magnetic properties. It is utilized in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) to allow organs, blood vessels, and other non-bony tissue to be more easily observed.Gadavist is used to identify certain conditions of the spine and brain (central nervous system), as well as the blood vessels in the kidneys and the heart. Gadavist can also be used in conjunction with an MRI of the breasts for the detection of the presence of breast cancer.

Side effects of Gadavist

See a doctor immediately. If you show symptoms of an allergic reaction, Gadavist may see hives, breathing problems, or swelling of your lips, face, and tongue.A few side effects from Gadavist can occur for several days after the injection.Gadobutrol can trigger a life-threatening disease in those suffering from chronic kidney diseases. Contact your physician right away if you experience any of the symptoms that indicate this condition, for example:

  • Swelling, burning, itching, and scaling or hardening of your skin
  • Muscles weak;
  • Joint stiffness that affects your hands, arms, or legs;
  • Deep bone pain in your ribs or hips could be indicative of deeper issues.
  • Difficulty getting moving difficulty moving
  • Skin discoloration or redness.

Contact your doctor at anytime if you suffer from:

  • Kidney issues There is no or little urine; it is difficult or painful to urinate; there is swelling in your ankles and feet; and you feel short of breath or tired.

Common Gadavist adverse effects could include:

  • Headache;
  • Dizziness;
  • Nausea;
  • Sensation of hotness;
  • Your mouth has developed an unusual or unpleasant flavor.
  • The sensation of coldness, warmth, or pain at the site of injection.

Cautions

Your physician may test your kidney function before you take this medication.Gadavist is a substance that can remain inside your body for months or even years after receiving this medication. It's not clear if this can cause health problems for people who have normal kidneys. Inform your physician that you've had multiple scans using an agent for contrast and also provide the date of the previous scan.

Prior to using this drug

Gadavist could cause a fatal illness in patients suffering from severe kidney diseases. Your doctor will examine your kidney function before you get this medicine.Gadobutrol is a substance that can remain within your body for a number of months or years after receiving this medication. It's not clear if it can cause health issues in people who have normal kidneys. Inform your doctor whether you've had a series of scans using contrast agents and also provide the date of the previous scan.You shouldn't take Gadavist if you are allergic to gadobutrol.

To be sure Gadavist is safe for you, ask your physician if you've ever experienced:

  • Renal disease (or if you're taking dialysis);
  • Any reaction that is triggered by any contrast agent
  • Diabetes;
  • Hypertension;
  • Liver disease;
  • Asthma, hay fever, and food or medication allergies;
  • An injury, surgery, or severe infection; or
  • If you are over 60, or living with someone over the age of 60, please read below.

It isn't known if Gadavist could harm a newborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are expecting or planning to be pregnant.It is not recommended to breastfeed while taking gadobutrol.Discuss any risks with your doctor.

How do I take Gadavist?

Gadavist is injected as an infusion into the vein. The healthcare professional will administer the injection at the hospital or clinic.

Usual Adult Dose of CNS Magnetic Resonance Imaging:

0.1 mg/kg body weight (0.1 mg/kg) IV Bolus injection
Comments: administer either by hand or using a power injector with a flow rate of 2 mL/sec. Consult the product specifications of the manufacturer for the amount that needs to be administered.
Use: Designed to be used with MRI to identify and assess areas of a dysfunctional BBB and/or a lack of blood flow to the central nervous system.

Usual Adult Dose for Diagnostics:

0.1 milliliters/kg body weight (0.1 mg/kg) IV Bolus injection
Comments: Apply the medication either by hand or using a power injector with a flow rate of about 2 mL/second. Check the manufacturer's product details to determine the volume required to administer.
Use: Ideally, it is used along with an MRI to determine the extent and presence of breast cancer malignancy.

Usual Pediatric Dose for CNS Magnetic Resonance Imaging:

0.1 milliliters/kg body weight (0.1 mg/kg) IV Bolus injection
Comments: administer either by hand or using a power injector with a flow rate of 2 mL per second. Consult the product specifications of the manufacturer for the amount that needs to be administered.
Use:
It is indicated for use with MRI to identify and assess areas that have a damaged BBB or abnormal vascularity of the central nervous system.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Because Gadavist is only used for an MRI or MRA, you won't be following a prescribed schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

Because the medicine is prescribed by a medical specialist in a medical setting, it is highly unlikely for an overdose to occur.

Interaction with other drug

Other medications can interfere with gadobutrol. This includes medications that are prescribed and available over the counter, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your health professionals about any medications you take in the present and about any medication you stop or start using.
